FINAL NOTE | Los Angeles | Tiffany Combs // Brooks + Scarpa
I cannot be more grateful for the memories that Practice Previews has given me.
In the two weeks that I was interning for Brooks + Scarpa:
I replaced all the blades in their wood-shop and repaired a few tools
Helped prep for a photo shoot of an existing space they previously designed
Created graphic artwork
Fixed the model stands in the wood-shop
Found replacement parts for the laser arm and lens for the laser cutter
Developed facade drawings and diagrams of a house project known as the Lipton Residence that is currently under construction in Chicago
Somehow was able to get close enough to Lucky-the-Office-Cat to pet her
Laid out and wrote text for their 2030 Sustainability plan in In-Design
Helped other interns with photo-shop and rhino
I felt like a part of the staff, and not necessarily just an intern. The office environment that they were able to provide for us was very warm and welcoming. Not once did I feel like I wasn’t able to handle what they were asking of me and felt more than prepared to take on any task at hand. Angie and Larry were very helpful in suggesting firms that I should look out for in the future for my Design-Build career and strongly suggested that I stay in California (they weren’t biased, I promise….).
Ultimately, I fell in love with the culture of Los Angeles. While I was able to visit various places including Burbank, Pasadena, Venice, Santa Monica, and successfully managed to avoid Skid Row I found that wherever I was located, California was truly somewhere I see myself being in the future.
On one final note, I have to publicly give a big “Thank You” to Marty. Without you, none of this would have been possible and I (and I’m sure everyone else) appreciate all of the hard work that you put into this program. It was a very life changing experience.
