IwamotoScott
Interning at IwamotoScott has been a very challenging but rewarding experience. There have been some late nights and pressing deadlines. However, I have learned so much already and I really enjoy working with the people here! Everyone is very talented and I’m impressed by how they handle all of the responsibilities of their job. San Francisco is also a gorgeous city and there is so much nature right outside it!

My first week of working for Morphosis has been an interstesing experience. Coming into the office I didn’t know what to expect, but I quickly learned how nice and casual everyone at the firm is. From the first day here, I began building massing models for a federally funded project and will most likely continue on this project for the remainder of the internship. Ive learned so much with the help of the designers and I can’t wait for next! - Abisai Martinez

UrbanLab has been a blast! Kevin and I got to meet Martin and Sarah Tuesday. They are great to work with. Our main mentor Omar has been very informative. We are working on a model for a residential building. Working in a firm setting as an intern is different from studio at the collegiate level. The design is done at the top leven the the work is delegated to the intern. The other employees seem to have more collaborative work with Martin and Sarah. The expectation of work ethic mimics that of college studios. Thanks studio professors!
The idea of precedent and case studies is still very much alive. Posted on the walls of the studio are the works of other employees. Much like desk crits, the images are redlines and subject to evaluation until the final result emerges. It’s been great to see the comparison between work at school and work in a small firm.

@ The Weber Group inc.
Day 3: The time has been going right along, a week and a half left is not that much more. On the first day, Sam Weber gave me a tour of the facility, walking me through their design + build process. The artists and designers will draft up a concept from the desires of the client and send it over to the shop. Here it is reviewed to see how it can be manufactured, and any tweaks that need to be made to make it happen. Once satisfied, the 3D modeling department take the sketches and, using Maya, Zbrush or 3DS, will turn the sketch into a model that can be loaded into the CNC. The model is cut from Styrofoam and assembled like a puzzle. Coated in fiberglass and painted, the model is finished. Some require special carpentry or metal working to include complex parts that are fulfilled by the master craftsman they employ. I got a chance to work in the 3D modeling department yesterday alongside Jerry Hodge jr, who worked for Disney for a bit and shared many of the same interests I have in character modeling and animation. On Monday I spent the day scanning in original hand renderings done by Donny Weber for projects, one such shown in the picture. Each was so imaginative and complex - most of them for water parks, zoos, and Great Wolf Lodge. Today, I stayed with the design team helping to create quick models for a project in order to get price estimates. They have me bouncing around to different areas and projects to provide me with a wide scope of experiences so I can best understand what I am most interested in.
Sonata Caric Portland, Oregon
Greetings from the West Coast!
Everything about this trip so far has been fantastic! I had a window seat on my flight here and luckily there were mostly clear skies. I had never stared out a plane window for that long. We flew over dozens of unique landscapes. There were a few small towns under the flight. The juxtaposition of civilization with nature was fascinating. The towns were all arranged in a grid plan to a boundary and then spread organically into the landscape from there.
Portland is a very interesting city. It is a metropolis filled with people who a dedicated to protecting the environment. It reminds me of Lexington on a larger scale, you can drive less than a mile outside the city and you are in nature. On Sunday, we visited the Japanese gardens, toured the city, and watched Black Panther in a tavern. Today is my third day at Skylab. The studio culture here is very active and friendly. I have gotten lunch with someone from work each day and participated in the design week meeting. I am currently building a model for a project that is not yet public, so that is all the detail I can give you guys.
Stay Tuned!
Day III
Snøhetta, NYC
Interning for Snøhetta is not what I expected. As soon as I arrived, I was assigned a project that will likely take through the end of the week to complete. While I work at my station, the conversations I hear around me are comfortingly familiar, as if it is just another day in studio. Most of my coworkers are young and quick to answer any questions I have. The best part of the day is lunch when we all sit together and get to know each other. Thankfully, I’m one of many newbies in this office! The atmosphere is extremely laid back (as I write this post in my sneakers and sweatshirt) and accommodating. I’m excited to see what the rest of the week holds for me!

Nick Hodge & Blane Hornung - Studio Gang, Chicago
Hey everyone!
We are checking in from Chicago, where we started working at Studio Gang yesterday. We actually got a head start on the experience and came up on Wednesday with our studio, Studio Louisville. On Thursday we got a tour of Studio Gang’s office, which is in the old Polish National Alliance building in Wicker Park. After the tour, we had a great work session in the office where we presented our research and preliminary concepts for the final project of the semester. On Friday we toured a number of Studio Gang’s projects including the Campus North Residential Commons at the University of Chicago, the Nature Boardwalk Lincoln Park Zoo, and the Eleanor Boathouse at Park 571.
After the tour, we checked out of the hotel we were staying in and into the apartment that we are renting while we are in Chicago. Over the weekend we both spent time exploring the surrounding neighborhoods and learning more about Chicago.
Yesterday was our first day as externs in the office. We are both working on different projects right now and really enjoying the work. There is such a diverse set of projects going on right now and it is an incredible opportunity to be able to be on the team and contributing for two weeks.
See you soon, Nick & Blane
