1972 marked a period when some design elements, like pillarless hardtop coupes, were nearing the end of their prevalence due to evolving safety standards (e.g., rollover requirements) not just for GM vehicles but generally the automotive industry globally. This included the use of heavy, durable, and pollutant-heavy materials in cars during the early 1970s was challenged by new environmental regulations
The intensive process of extracting iron ore and processing steel generated significant waste and pollution. Plus early recycling efforts were less sophisticated. Cars were often openly burned to remove plastics before being crushed, a process that released pollutants into the air, the impact and consequences that many inhabitants of this planet are still suffering from. The rise of "minimills" in the 1970s, which required higher-quality, shredded scrap, drove improvements in recycling methods thankfully though the damage to our environment impacting all life worldwide.
