What do you think about Bugs’ characterization in Wabbit/New Looney Tunes?

Honestly, I find his characterisation to be very distracting from the comedy of his shorts. I find that Wabbit/NLTs is paced in a way that upsets the tone of Golden Age era shorts--which are my bread and butter for how I measure the quality of Looney Tunes shorts.

I'll quickly establish that I like Bugs Bunny when he's able to get knocked down a peg--maybe even several! I like Tex Avery's depictions of Bugs... so for a lot of post-Golden Age/post 50s Bugs shorts, I don't get that attached to him for his personality. He can have some funny quips, or minimally entertaining bits here and there, but it would make me think he can only be as good as the set ups from his co-stars. Which also ends up getting deeply meta-commentated on by Space Jam 2--aka Space Jam: A New Legacy (which deserves a retrospective essay one of these days)--where Al G Rhythm spares diss on Bugs "bunny never funny." Which seems to vocalise the contrarian opinion that Bugs is an overhyped comic character; I couldn't tell you if nowadays the pendulum of public favour's shifted for or against Bugs, but what I can address is that the pressure for Bugs Bunny to "stay relevant" is the undercurrent narrative for a lot of meta-reliant premises related to him.

It's ultimately hard for Bugs to escape the expectation to stay relevant in a counterculture, revolutionary way--the way he was back in his early years. His novelty of being adult, risque for a cartoon lead, and legitimately funny as a personality has been lost in a sea of more adventurous characters and modern liberties. Bugs can't be too experimental and thus is stuck with fitting into what modern executions of him have seemingly settled with: the justice-oriented, liberal-leaning lead with a mischievous streak. The latter sometimes seems negotiated out of the package for kids show purposes.

So, long, long set up to my opinion's over....

I think that NLTs' Bugs is a step above his TLTS counterpart by not writing him like a Seinfeld lead with the energy of a retail worker, but NLTs is ultimately following off of Bugs' character direction from that show. It just reduces the Seinfeld and replaces it with a minimal amount of unhinged looney. But my preferred version of Bugs is the guy that borders on trickster god, but also self-sabotaging loudmouth--which is a spectrum that relies on UNHINGED with a capital U.

Looney Tunes Cartoons for example (though I'm not a ride or die fan) gives you that good ol chest-charged yell from Bugs. There was that one clip of Bugs seemingly getting eviscerated gruesomely--that circulated social media for good reason. Loud, audacious, and engagement-driven--that's how I like Bugs; if his own mouth doesn't give him away, his body language is the next loudest instrument to orchestrate his or others' downfall.

He's one of my favourite Looney Tunes for those specific reasons. He's difficult to replicate in that exact way because it's hard to identify--let alone distinguish--what it was about his Golden Era shorts that enticed viewers to him.

This of course is no longer an opinion piece just about NLTs Bugs, but Bugs' characterisations in modern times. In summary, I like a very specific version of Bugs Bunny that no media has ever replicated in recent time in my humble opinion. So, I tolerate NLTs Bugs at most, he's just not my Bugs.
