The Shadow Wizard of the Day is the Brown Mage from Everhood!
by Jenny Brozek
Aiwendil
Lover of Birds, Servant of Yavanna, Tender of Beasts
Other names: Radagast the Brown
Aiwendil was a Maia of Yavanna’s people, who eventually became known in Middle-earth as the wizard Radagast the Brown. As a servant of Yavanna, who is essentially Mother Nature, Aiwendil was associated with the plants and animals that were created by his mistress. His name, which means Lover of Birds, suggests that out of all of Yavanna’s creations he was especially connected to birds. Aiwendil isn’t mentioned much in the Silmarillion or Tolkien’s earlier works, so we don’t know much about his time in Valinor. When the Valar selected the Maiar to be sent to Middle-earth as the Istari, the ones who were specifically picked by the Valar were Curumo (Saruman), Olorin (Gandalf), and Alatar. Alatar took Pallando along as a friend, and Yavanna apparently begged Curumo to take Aiwendil with him, to which he grudgingly agreed. It thus isn’t clear if Aiwendil himself wanted to go or if he simply submitted to Yavanna’s request, much like how Olorin didn’t feel ready to go but was picked by Manwë and Varda anyway.
In Middle-earth he became known as the wizard Radagast and his associated color was brown, fitting for a servant of a Mother Earth figure. While he was most known for his strong association with birds and beasts, he was also said to be very knowledgeable on the properties of herbs, making him a skilled healer. Radagast also had a friendly relationship with Olorin/Gandalf/Mithrandir, and at one point in his early drafts Tolkien has Gandalf refer to Radagast as his cousin. Despite the meaning of Radagast’s name in Valinor, Gandalf is described as having better understanding of birds and commanding more respect from them than Radagast. This is probably because of the fact that, while Yavanna made the birds, they were more strongly associated with the sky Vala Manwë, of whom Gandalf was a servant. This doesn’t appear to have caused any bad feelings between Gandalf and Radagast though.
Radagast at one point lived at Rhosgobel near Mirkwood, and though he seemed somewhat antisocial he did maintain contact with Saruman and Gandalf and he is also known to have interacted with Beorn occasionally. Saruman looked down on him and referred to him behind his back as Radagast the Bird-tamer, Radagast the Simple, and Radagast the Fool. But Saruman, who was known for his ability to persuade people, was able to manipulate the innocent and somewhat naive Radagast to serve his quest to obtain the One Ring. Radagast later unknowingly helped saved Gandalf from Saruman’s imprisonment when he sent the great eagle Gwaihir to the Orthanc with news. He isn’t really mentioned much after this; after the Council of Elrond messengers were sent to various locations including his home, but he wasn’t there. He doesn’t appear in the rest of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and there is debate among fans about what might have happened to him and whether he accomplished his quest. All we know is that he was not mentioned among the group of Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, Frodo, Bilbo, and Cirdan that left Middle-earth at the end of Return of the King. But these individuals had all born a ring of power at some point, while Radagast hadn’t, so that isn’t necessarily any indication of whether he survived the War of the Ring or not.
