i know fanart is a lot more popular around here but i really want to post some of my original work too so here is this wizard i made for uni. also my name is literally gandalf the gray (but in romanian) so WIZARD!!!
My main headcanon for why Gandalf just randomly disappears throughout the quest is that he sobered up and needed to go back to his supplier to get his BIGGEST hit of that Old Toby
If I had a nickel for each time a wizard died and came back to life wearing white, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s funny it happened twice.
it's possible they're only marketing the Stranger because he's officially Gandalf™ and they want to make up for all the time they didn't get to promote such a well-known character to general audiences BUT ☝️ I hope we get to see the beginnings of Gandalf as a foil to Sauron even if his primary opponent is still the Dark Wizard
Gandalf eventually receives the ring of fire to better kindle the hearts of Men and rally them in the fight against Sauron, so in that vein I think he'll try to liberate the Eastern peoples under DW's power (moth ladies mayhaps?? They seem quite afraid of him) by inspiring them to rebel, while Sauron will look to the Gaudrim and use a similar tactic to gain their loyalty
another notable contrast could be if Gandalf frees the moth ladies who are indebted to DW for teaching them magic vs Sauron enslaving the Men by giving them rings of power
New look at Gandalf! Wearing TomBom's hat?

From Dimitra Fimi's [substack post]
When I caveat many of my research points about Tolkien (e.g. there’s no evidence that he knew/meant that - that we know of) is because there’s still primary material that is out there and that we haven’t seen yet. This is a case in point: newly discovered letter by Tolkien to be sold by Christie’s (details here: christies.com/en/lot/lo…). Exciting new information about Middle-earth and Wales (something I’ve lectured on in the past for Literature Wales, in an outdoors “literary walk” right by Crickhowell!) and on Ents (see my previous two pieces in my “slow” LotR re-read series!) More anon! 🏴
