Have you ever heard of people putting gold fish in water troughs? I was at a barn today that did that and I had never seen it before.

I just recently heard of that and I guess it makes sense, but it seems like it’d be more maintenance than it’s worth and also not very fair to the fish if the tank wasn’t set up properly for them.

Don't know if you're still on the stabling issue but I thought I would share a story. A few years ago ny dad purchased a Friesian from a couple that didn't properly care for him. For his whole life(10 yrs) he was kept in a stall.

Never really got out and his stall wasnt properly cleaned. Since we had the money, my dad bought him and took him to an equine hospital where he got surgery as he had developed something in both hind legs(cant remember what). For over a year, he had to be bandaged frecuently and taken to multiple vet visits. He couldnt move much at first, so the vet advised that we not move him a lot, just a bit of hand walking. Finally, the vets said he was ready to start working. This is when we realized all the issues stalling had caused. If we cross tied him facing an open door he would not stop moving and as soon as he was unclipped he would race to his stall. He would leap through any passageway and would refuse to pass through gates, digging his heels in and pulling us back. The indoor arena was not connected to the barn and so we would have to walk him out there. He would freak at the little things: cats, poles, parked cars, leaves, shadows etc. In the arena we couldnt get him to walk past an open door until it was shut. He was always agitated whenwe tried to hand graze him and would pull us back to the barn. Around other horses he would try to take off as far away as possible. When he was in the outdoor, he would be uncontrollable, spinning in circles until we took him back inside. Bathing him was a nightmare as the wash stall was next to a door and he would just prance in place and tug on his ropes. After he would drag us back to his stall. Thankfully, everyone at the barn had helped him through his initial recovery process and no one wanted to give up. For over two years everyone worked hard to desensitize him to the outdoors and horses(he had never been near another until we got him) Eventually he became so bombproof we took him to a few parades. We could leave him in a pasture without worry that he would injure himself. My younger cousin(who had quit after an early fall) gained confidence on him and took up riding again.

That is awful. I’m so glad you were able to rehab him and show him how to be a normal horse, though! :)

Any tips for what to do when riding a horse that likes to cut in on the backside? I tend to do fine on the trot, but she cuts in at the canter.

Have you tried giving her a bit more of a pocket when at a canter?

Or an excessive I love doing at the moment is with 4 barrels. Instead of a square though, I have mine set up as a diamond. And then I just go in the same direction around them for a while. Also I really work on having him shaped up right up until the power spot. For me and my horse, it has stopped him cutting in because he has to do a full 360 around if, not more on some.

I don’t know if my advice is great but it has worked for me.
