These guys warped my unmolested 11th-grade brain, & I loved it.

Still SF’s best punk band ever.  No one before (or since) did it like these guys.

STEVE DEPACE (drummer): "I agree with you. I would say that there’s elements of various different things and styles within FLIPPER, which ultimately leads to that. It’s been said that we’re part art performance, part art rock, noise rock, art noise, punk rock, grunge – all of those things. But we just kind of are what we are. It may change a bit here and there with different people in the band and different incarnations, but there’s a basic element that remains the same. We tend to stand out, you know?"

Bruce Loose, Vocalist of Hardcore Titans Flipper, Dies at 66

The singer led the inspiringly anarchic and grumpy San Francisco band through its heyday, influencing torchbearers including Kurt Cobain

Remembering Bruce Loose 1959-2025

I'm a little late to learning about this but musician Bruce Loose has died at 66. He was the singer / bassist for San Francisco punk Flipper. He was a founding member in 1979 and was with them through all their iterations until he left (or fired) in 2015.

Flipper were a huge influence on Nirvana. Kurt Cobain wore a Flipper t-shirt during their 1992 appearance on SNL and in the "Come As You Are" music video. In 2001, Flipper covered Nirvana's "Scentless Apprentice" for a Nirvana tribute album. From 2006 to 2009, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic became a member of Flipper and appeared on the band's album Love and the live album Fight (both great albums I might add).

Más pérdidas sensibles en el vasto (a veces basto) universo del rock, Bruce Loose de la banda punk de San Francisco de finales de los setenta Flipper. Su himno "Sex Bomb" puede recordar al atentado sonoro "L.A. Blues" de Stooges en "Funhouse" (Elektra, 1970). Aunque Flipper no hacían free jazz en un sentido tradicional, su enfoque radical, caótico y subversivo guarda un parentesco claro con su filosofía libre. Punk "antiforma" que rompía intencionadamente con las estructuras convencionales del propio punk, apostando por la repetición hipnótica, el ruidismo y una actitud de confrontación respecto al oyente.

La de arriba es la segunda versión de "Sex Bomb", la que cerró su primer LP "Album – Generic Flipper" en 1982. La primera versión salió en un single de 1981, ambas en Subterranean Records.
