I've been rewatching the animated Justice League series lately. I'd forgotten just how good this series was. Characters develop and change over time, they make some gutsy moves by actually killing characters, but don't go so far overboard with it as to make character death empty, and it maintained a long running continuity that went all the way back to Batman the animated series.
I'm really digging Hawkgirl in this outing. Her tough attitude and stubbornness leads her to conflict with other characters, which provides a strong basis for both her own development as well as others. She's quickly risen to be my favorite character in the series. This series is also why John Stewart is by far my favorite green lantern.
It seems that Bruce Timm can do no wrong. It's just too bad that everything he's made lately gets canceled. What's so great about these series? They're not afraid of being comic book based series. They're unashamed, and celebrate that comics can be intelligent and mature (real maturity not just grimdark) while still being fun. DC could stand to look back at what was done with the Justice League animated series and remember how to do it right.
