SESSION NOTES:
[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]
The room is quiet as Bruce and Dick sit across from Dr. Eto. Dick, as always, is slightly more relaxed, while Bruce is the picture of stoic determination. Dr. Eto smiles calmly and begins.
Dr. Eto: gently “Good afternoon, gentlemen. We’re here to talk through some issues regarding your communication. You’ve both been in each other’s lives for a very long time, but clearly, there are still some unresolved things. So, let’s dive right into it. How do you each view your relationship with the other?”
Dick Grayson: grinning slightly, leaning back in his chair “Well, I suppose it’s... complicated. On one hand, I’m Batman’s first sidekick, the original Robin. On the other hand, sometimes, I feel like I’m just the first mistake.”
Bruce Wayne: narrowing his eyes at Dick, but keeping his voice measured “That’s not what I meant, Dick.”
Dr. Eto: raising an eyebrow “I see. You’ve clearly had a history, and not all of it has been pleasant. Bruce, you’ve been Dick’s mentor for a long time, but there seems to be some unresolved tension here. Would you care to elaborate?”
Bruce Wayne: looking a bit frustrated, but trying to keep his calm “I’m not going to deny that things have been difficult at times. Dick left for Blüdhaven, and... there was a lot left unsaid. There are things I regret, but... it’s not easy. Being a parent is never easy.”
Dick Grayson: with a sharp edge in his tone, crossing his arms “A parent? Is that what you think this is? A parent-childrelationship? Is that how you see me?”
Bruce Wayne: looking slightly taken aback, but not showing it “Dick, you’re more than just my partner. I’ve raised you, and you’ve been by my side longer than anyone else. You may not like the term ‘parent,’ but that’s what it is. You are my son, in every sense of the word that matters.”
Dr. Eto: softly “It seems like this issue runs deeper than just professional boundaries. Dick, how do you feel about this ‘parent-child’ dynamic Bruce speaks of?”
Dick Grayson: scoffing “I’ve always been his partner. I wasn’t some... some project he took in to fix. I chose this life. And I’ve always felt like I was fighting for approval when all I wanted was to be treated like a man.”
Bruce Wayne: gently, but firmly “I never meant to treat you like a project. I wanted you to be something more than what we were before. I wanted you to have more. I did what I thought was best for you.”
Dr. Eto: with a slight smile “It sounds like there’s a lot of pride in both of you, but also a lot of fear of being misunderstood. Bruce, you care deeply for Dick, but Dick, you feel like you’ve had to prove your worth constantly, even after all these years. Is that accurate?”
Dick Grayson: voice a little quieter, but still frustrated “I’m not some kid that needs to be fixed, Bruce. I’ve been trying to prove that for years, but it’s hard when you’re so... rigid. When you never let me breathe without trying to tell me how I should act, how I should feel.”
Bruce Wayne: looking away, his voice quieter now “I’m trying to protect you, Dick. I don’t know how else to do it. There’s always a risk, and I couldn’t stand the idea of losing you the way I lost... others.”
Dr. Eto: softly “It’s clear that both of you care for each other, but there’s a lack of understanding between you. Bruce, you try to protect Dick, but that protection feels controlling to him. Dick, you want to prove you can handle things on your own, but that means pushing Bruce away. So, where do we go from here?”
Dick Grayson: pausing, looking at Bruce more carefully “Maybe I don’t need protection. But... maybe I do need your trust. I just... I’ve been carrying this weight for too long, and I don’t know if I can keep doing it alone.”
Bruce Wayne: after a long pause, his voice softer “I don’t want you to feel like you’re alone in this. I may not always show it, but I do trust you. Maybe I just need to show it more.”
Dr. Eto: smiling slightly “This is progress. Trust is something that can’t be rushed, but it can be built slowly. I think you both need to work on communicating better. It’s not about control, Dick. And it’s not about breaking free from control, Bruce. It’s about working together, as equals.”
Dick Grayson: softly “I’m not asking for perfect. I just want us to be able to work together and understand each other without all the tension. I’ve always wanted to be a part of your mission... but I want to be part of this family, too.”
Bruce Wayne: looking at Dick, finally allowing a slight softening in his gaze “We’ll figure this out. You’ve always been a part of the family. Always.”
