Jason considered it amusing, how Dick hated speaking about Bruce, and yet saw him everywhere - an incessant presence, guarding over his former Boy Wonder with a morbidity that, Jason would say, was mutual.

And Dick didn’t reply, didn't say his name out loud. Like a curse, wary that pronouncing it could've awakened dormant feelings and old drama.

"Listen, dude," Jason broke the silence, at last, fiddling with his fingers like a bratty child waiting to be punished. "Bruce―he said I could stay with you on the weekends and with him the rest of the week."

Dick and dad together, talking about boring adult stuff, sipping Alfred’s tea side by side, perhaps under the veranda at the manor. Nice, during the hours when the sun peeps from behind Gotham's skyline, and it shines for its last moment before the eventide. The light would gleam over Dick's head like his lamp is doing right now and Bruce would lose himself in the same thoughts - that Dick is beautiful, they can live happily like a family and―

"I'm sure your father is busy, Tim. It was nice to see you here, but I don't want to bother you."

For once, since forever, Bruce yields to an odd moment of selfishness. He allows himself to glance at Dick with no haste, with the devoted fervour the latter truly deserves. He sinks against the backrest and drinks the view in: Dick’s skin is glowing, the bump of his belly more noticeable to the eye, a soft swell that can be seen through the fabric of his clothes.

He’s not wearing his pyjamas, not really. It’s one of Bruce’s old t-shirts, long enough to reach his thighs. Bruce can still catch a glimpse of his hips — tender, round curves that he follows with his gaze until a sudden realisation settles in his mind.

He has missed so much, prioritising Gotham while Dick needed him the most.

His mind went blank, lost in a sea of futile questions and details he wanted to ask first. He began to fiddle with his fingers as he gathered the information he was already aware of ― small, little things that Dick had revealed by mistake, or the way his eyes had shown anger in the past. And Bruce as well, at this very moment, wasn’t doing anything to hide an evident sense of guilt.

"He dumped you." Jason ventured, reading a certain hesitancy in how the elder tilted his head back against his chair.

"It would be correct to say it was mutual." Bruce confessed, voice completely neutral. "Robin left Batman, that is true."

"But you left Dick?"

And there it was, escaping his lips with a low sigh, the secret Jason had been waiting for. "Dick deserves someone better."
