The snow continues to fall, and I’m not sure how this thematic connection came about, but I’ve always thought that German organ music has a winter mood to it. But instead of putting on an expected Bach piece, I decided to check out another composer from the “North German School”. Nicolaus Bruhns was a student of Dieterich Buxtehude [a prominent Baroque organ composer who’s name I have yet to learn to pronounce right] who was considered to be one of the great organists at the time. Unfortunately, only a handful of Bruhns’ works still survive. But his style sounds almost like an improvisation, and uses a lot of techniques that Bach would employ in his early organ works. And the cold pipes match the mood of the snow falling outside my window
