Buck doesn't look up at first, focused on the bubbling pot of sauce before him. It likely doesn't need such attention, given the whole 'a watched pot never boils' phrase, but Buck knows he's better off babying it than getting distracted.

He doesn't want to clean up an overboiled disaster in the firehouse kitchen again. Which he still maintains was Chimney's fault.

But, Stella's words are just vague enough to make him curious. "Oh," he nearly drops the wooden spoon in the pot. "What don't I know? Is this about William at 123? I already heard all about that."

the sound of her voice prompted him to turn around, and quickly. she’d always had that effect on him, even way back when. funny how some things just never changed. he blinked several times, mind racing as he tried to ascertain exactly what she might have been referring to. his job meant that he knew a lot of things that couldn’t be shared, and truly, lois could have been annoyed by any number of them.

brows raising in surprise, hands came up in front of him in a gesture of almost surrender. ❝ maybe ? ❞ he admitted, shrugging quickly. the best move was to try and diffuse the lane-bomb, and then understand what she was talking about. then he might be able to give a proper answer. ❝ can you give me a clue as to what we’re talking about here ? that way we can at least try to be on the same page ? ❞

the glow of the rising sun threatened to stir around the edges of her curtains, a ticking time bomb of distraction, which could bring them back to the harsh reality of the situation any second. his comment wasn’t anticipated but equally, not untrue. ❝ not exactly, no. ❞ she agreed, rolling over to face him. ❝ it all became quite familiar, didn’t it ? ❞

shit. it wasn’t that she hadn’t been avoiding him –– she had –– but she’d hoped that he wouldn’t have quite figured that part out. she’d been making sure that he was kept busy, dates with the women in the house, interviews with various tabloid outlets that wanted to know more about the dreamy mark sloan looking for love. but if rachel knew anything about herself, it was that she had to keep a distance from him, or else she might fall back into old patterns. ❝ do you really think i would go so far as to avoid you ? ❞ deflection was always a good place to start when it came to denial.

❝ it keeps me very busy, producing a show like this. you might be the suitor, but the world of everlasting is far bigger than just you. ❞ taking a swing at his ego might have been a risk, but she’d have to do what she could while she was quite literally backed into a corner. away from the rest of the crew, her back against the stone of the exterior wall of the mansion, most of the other staff would be preparing for the evening shoot on the other side of the premises. ❝ did you have any other questions, or can i carry on with my job now ? ❞

brooke stayed fixed in place, laying on her back on the grass as she stared up into the sky. it was serene, her thoughts getting lost in the stars above her, the realisation that life was so much bigger than she could have considered it to be. far bigger than the small universe of tree hill. ❝ you got a time machine ? ❞ she asked, head turning slightly in the direction of jordan. she was grateful for the company, but she feared that this was far from help. ❝ how long can we just wait for things to figure themselves out before we give up ? are we really meant to just trust that it will all work out in the end ? ❞
