Yes and no.
I still think that a tightly organised internally disciplined and committed revolutionary cadre is necessary to constitute a material and ideological bulwark against Capital, especially in these atomized times, and a democratic centralist organisation gives minority party's both the strength and flexibility to shift the conditions far in exes of its size, not to mention its function as a university for the class. However to partly answer your second question, about the dichotomy between Vanguard and Mass party, yes, i think it is a real opposition created by the tides in class consciousness....wheathere there exist and real vanguards, or mas workers parties is another matter...
