Once upon a time, there was a laboratory. That laboratory was created for a noble purpose, but the passage of time has corrupted it into something unrecognizable.
The laboratory may seem noble like how it’s supposed to be at first glance, as if it's always like this. However, if you look through the cracks—the facade—you can see corruption within the laboratory.
Unethical experiments. Mistreatment of scientists. Conspiracies about a supernatural substance, and the laboratory trying to utilize it for their own ends. Maybe even more. Of course, the laboratory tries to hide it, but the cracks still remain.
One day, somebody, idealistic as the sun, decided to work there as a scientist, swiftly realizing the corruption behind the facade. The scientist tries to make the best out of it, and for a while, it worked.
The scientist made friends. Made discoveries together. Even talked about things.
But alas, a makeshift purity within the corruption was not meant to last. Especially when they have utterly ignored the corruption that is still there, growing stronger day by day.
Without them realizing, the corruption changed the scientist. Changed them from an optimistic person with endless potential into an anxious shell of what was.
Eventually, an accident occurred. An accident that killed the scientist’s friends, and left only few survivors. Now, the scientist is left to fend for themselves in this new world, after someone they trusted the most had left them too.
The supernatural phenomenon has messed with their minds ever since they first stepped foot in the laboratory, and now, as the scientist has hit a new low of despair and grief, the malicious entity is allowed to take over, driving the scientist to insanity.
While they might have survived that tragic incident that day, perhaps their sense of self had not.
And now, the scientist is nothing more than a hollow shell of themself, cursed to wander… and kill.
Am I talking about Hofnarr and the Nexus Core? Perhaps so, but maybe I’m talking about someone else. Someone who has similar experiences as him, with the exception of a few details left out from this tale.
