The first collection I've designed for Bruuns Bazaar is now in Synsam and Profil optic stores in Scandinavia!
copenhagen fashion week: bruuns bazaar

okay, so dayum. in a turn i just fully don't understand, it seems that there are plenty of blogs and websites out there interested enough in what has transpired at copenhagen fashion week to post/blog/re-blog images of the shows, but none of them seem to want to find the time to write about the proceedings, either. but much like so many of the other shows we've discussed thus far, danish label bruuns bazaar (which we've had the opportunity to see once before, for the s/s 2012 season) has been saddled with much the same fate for their latest presentation, for the s/s 2013 season.
yet. unlike some of the other houses, which have received all-but-no coverage, bruuns bazaar did get lucky with a couple of decent reviews (yayyayyay!). and for the upcoming spring, the danish site cover related that the brand's designer (trans.) "Rebekka Bay has been inspired by Copenhagen's architecture, and the entire collection is also steeped in the Danish design tradition, which seems to be a part of her DNA." in other words, what was on display was the classic minimalism, for which we know the house so well.
the site went on to note that before us we saw (again, trans.) "(b)eautiful, quiet and pure Scandinavian minimalism. Rebekka Bay has stripped everything unnecessary, and the result is a summer 2013 collection [in which] both female and male sides are incredibly beautiful and incredibly Bay'sk. The colour palette was dominated by earthy colours, [including] white and always neat black...Super nicely and politely [constructed] without being boring." and i really couldn't disagree--the lines were clean and crisp, and the tailoring was some of the most immaculate i've seen in recent months.
similarly, the swedish site blame it on fashion opined that "Rebekka Bay impressed with a strong, sophisticated and minimalistic collection," and although they actually chose to focus on the menswear, swipelife's review was applicable to the women's clothing just the same: "It’s a breath of fresh air for those who have been looking for casually formal wear...Cable-knit sweaters, long jackets, knee-length shorts and a soft color palette create a trend that will last a lifetime. The easy separates and beautiful attire facilitate a successful first date and a thousand compliments. It’s not always a good idea to dress up. Sometimes, it is better to let loose and let Bruuns Bazaar do the work."
finally, in their assessment of the spring collection, the danish website alt for damerne focused on the textiles, stating that the (trans.) "brand focuses on more expensive and more attractive materials because it really is important to stand strong and stand out in quality." and so it was. i myself was blown away by the manner in which ms. bay was able to take such basic, classic hues with nary a pop amongst them--navy, pearly gray, white, khaki, and black--to cut such winning pieces, garments that (classic as they were) felt like we were beholding them for the first time. i said a year ago that her work reminds me a bit of the designer jil sander, and that still holds today. it's just a shame that sometimes our eye is first drawn to brights, when these shine, in their quite way, so much stronger (see additional show images at glamour).

copenhagen fashion week: bruuns bazaar

although i'm as ever availing myself of opportunities to bitch about how fashion is misunderstood, i've of course found myself corrected after recently claiming that scandinavian fashion is not all darkness and minimalism with the spring 2012 issue from copenhagen label bruuns bazaar. though lovely, it was, needless to say, indicative of so many things these kids expect to come out of denmark: all clean lines and classical (if darker-leaning) shades.
as glamour points out, the label has recently undergone a seachange, with swedish designer rebekka bay (formerly of cos) newly appointed to the post (as of april 2011) of creative director. thus, this was the first time cfw had seen her work, and although there was the occasional pop of not-so-bright colour like peach (being the liveliest, as below) or pale yellow, the range was dominated by classic tones of black, navy, white, and khaki, with smooth refined lines to unruffled-ly drink it all in.
"The looks are very plain, reduced and wearable," (trans.) opined les mads, while australian site the vine first pointed out that, indeed, the event's entire season was defined by "minimalism in both shade and shape, with plenty of tailored separates in white and sand," before going on to comment that the bruuns bazaar show was replete with "boxy shape(s)...with high, rounded necklines emphasising wide cut shoulders and stiff, generous sleeves."
and although ms. bay certainly did turn her attention to the fun times in girls' lives, adding short shorts, jumpsuits, and some fairly abbreviated hemlines to her cocktail dresses, work seemed to be foremost in her consciousness. trim trousers (with a few baggier versions also on offer) and sweaters, tailored jackets, pretty draped dresses, and smart blouses were key to her catwalk assortment, and even the shorts were often paired with a blazer for a more suit-like appearance.
there were some slight eighties inflections and i couldn't help but feel a dash of recent, raf simons-designed jil sander (particularly the s/s 2011 season) in ms. bay's work. needless to say, the show won't be one of the poppin' eye-catching smash hits of the week, but it had a real elegance and offered some sharp options that ought speak to everyone that has been going on a panic since the recent stock market dips: indeed, these were true investment pieces one might own for decades to come.
