So I’ve said before that I have a few critiques with Encanto here and there, (even though the movie is amazing of course) and I felt like sharing one small critique today!
So since the movie starts out with Antonio’s ceremony, then goes from that to Isabela’s engagement to the ending, I feel as if we never really got to know any of the characters as THEMSELVES fully without the plot, if that makes sense. (For example, I don’t know if the way Isabela treated Mirabel was how she NORMALLY acted all her life, or was just acting like that for the events of the movie or not) What I mean is, since all these things in the movie are happening that would make the characters under stress or react to something, we never fully get to know how they are on a normal day, what they’re like in general without a big event happening. While it is easy to predict how some characters would act by what we’ve seen (like Mirabel and Félix would be upbeat, or Julieta and Luisa would be caring) I feel like the movie should have started out a few days before Antonio’s ceremony, so then we can get a feel of how each character and each dynamic is, or at least most of them since the family is so big. Like maybe it would open with Mirabel telling stories to the kids about what her family is like, (just like the song but longer) and we have a short montage of how things run in the casita, THEN skip to the day preparing for Antonio’s ceremony. Now you could say Encanto is one of those movies where you figure out what some of the characters and dynamics are like THROUGH the events of the movie, and yeah I agree, but I still feel like if the movie had given a little time to the characters and even the setting (because I’m curious on the village, mainly how the village views Mirabel personally and her family) before the plot moved forward, (because I will admit the beginning is a little fast paced to take in everything) it would have been better, better than it already WAS though that is lol.
Encanto is still one of my current obsessions, so I certainly plan on sharing more critiques because I have a few more, and the reason why I say “critiques” is because even though there’s a shitload to praise, I can’t really say what anyone else has already said about this movie, it’s just phenomenal in so many ways, at least to me, so it would kinda be boring if I kept saying “this movie is good” over and over again, so why not share a few nitpicks and stuff I had right? So stay tuned for that, though I probably will praise it from here and there once and awhile.
Also I don’t know how this fandom is, so I’m a little scared to be honest to share critiques in general with this movie since it’s so huge, so please do not harass in the comments! I love this movie to bits but I still would love to share personal issues I had in the near future! ❤️

So I certainly plan on talking about Encanto more, (because it’s an AMAZING movie and there’s so much to talk about) but for now, I wanted to share a small criticism/nitpick I had with the film, mainly the conflict between Isabela and Mirabel. Now, I want to say first that I love the conflict as a whole, it’s about both characters understanding one another as sisters, seeing where the other comes from and understanding how they feel. I’ll also say how I freaking LOVE the idea that Isabela never knew she could grow things like plants and cactuses because she was stuck being a perfect portrait all her life until she finally blew up, that was just brilliant. No two sisters get along perfectly at all, and the song “What Else Can I Do” showcases how the two make up in a decent way.
However of course, despite it being decent, I still had an issue. My nitpick is that while Mirabel needed to learn that Isabela had feelings as well and wasn’t just NOT struggling emotionally at all, (which btw, is a REALLY good lesson, I love that) I feel as though the movie itself never called Isabela out on her actions, or at least never made HER learn a lesson as well. Now, I had the feeling the writers were going for exactly what I said above, a dynamic on how the two had to learn to understand one another and how they feel, but that’s the issue, ONE ANOTHER. They both should have played a part in their conflict, and while Mirabel did help Isabela let her emotions out and had to understand she was struggling, Isabela never learns anything about Mirabel, or grows to understand her like her sister did. This conflict would have made more sense if only MIRABEL was the problem in their relationship, but they BOTH were. Mirabel thought that Isabela’s life was perfect, therefore she couldn’t be upset at anything, but ISABELA was the one who was blatantly cruel to her throughout the ENTIRE movie, and while SOME of her frustrations towards Mirabel were understandable, there were moments where she was just so mean spirited to her for NO reason. Watching Isabela in this movie is honestly torture for me, because while I feel bad for her as well, I obviously feel bad for freaking Mirabel, because she didn’t deserve the way she was treated from her sister at all, ESPECIALLY since Isabela was never considerate of her feelings either with the whole “not having a gift” thing. It just felt like the movie was using the fact that Isabela was perfect her whole life to excuse her shitty actions towards Mirabel and it just doesn’t. You feel bad for Isabela yes, and her immediately saying how she’s been stuck being perfect is totally in character for her, but the fact that she never had to learn HERSELF how she treated Mirabel was wrong, or even apologize to her for that matter is disappointing.
Now I want to make it clear, I don’t hate Isabela. I mean...I hate how she was until she was given depth, but I don’t hate her as a whole. I think the lesson she learned was great, the song was great, I just think the writing could have been a tad better with their conflict during their fight and the song. For example, there’s a small detail during what else I can do that kills me. When Mirabel sings the line “You just seem like you’re life’s been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes”- that line is actually really important because it’s Mirabel finally explaining why she acted the way she acted towards Isabela, because she thought her life was 100% perfect. But while she says that, Isabela isn’t even LISTENING to her in that moment, she’s too focused on what’s going on. I feel like that SMALL scene just needed to have Isabela listening to her saying that, because then she would have understood where MIRABEL was coming from, same to how Mirabel understood where SHE was coming from, then the conflict would work more. Instead though, the movie just has Isabela be mean to Mirabel, and then paint her as the person who needs to learn a lesson when they BOTH should have, and while it’s cute to see them make up, Isabela should have learned to not be so mean to Mirabel and be considerate of how she felt for not having a gift.
