Are astronomy and the zodiac considered the same thing or are they just similar or closely connected?

No. Astronomy is the the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. 

I believe you’re thinking of astrology. And yes, that would be the same type of things as dealing with the zodiac.
