My new Sera Myu Ranking
Here's another ranking of all the Sera Myus, since I've seen them all by now. I'll only write about the ones new to the list.
I won't include Sailor Moon The Super Live because that would be even more subjective, and not everyone has been able to see it. (It would inevitably be in the top 5, simply because of everything I experienced that evening!)
I don't know if it was officially recorded, but I don't think so. I will put the original version and revised versions together and not separate them like I did with the first list.
Disclaimer: This is all my personal opinion and it can of course change when I watch the musicals again and the list can look completely different in a few days/weeks/months.
22th place: Shin Densetsu Kourin (1998)
21th place: Un Nouveau Voyage (2015)
20th place: Starlight Ryuusei Densetsu (2003)
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but whatever. Marina overacts a lot in this musical, and everything is generally very exaggerated. Mamoru is pretty mean to Usagi, but that's probably because of the script. I personally find the Senshi Shitennou romance portrayed unpleasantly, or as the cool kids would say, cringe. But that could also be due to Japanese humor, which I probably don't fully understand. I also thought certain songs would come on now, but they didn't.
19th place: Kaguya-hime no Koibito (2021)
18th place: 30th Anniversary Musical Festival Chronicle (2022)
17th place: Sailor Stars & Kaiteiban (1996 - 1997)
It doesn't have much to do with the rest of the Stars arc, but I like it. The scene set in the Edo period is a bit odd. I know it's supposed to be a parody of Japanese theater, but it's still strange. It gets particularly emotional at the end when Usagi has to watch what's happening to her friends. What's special is that Usagi says for the first time that she hates someone (Galaxia). The endings are different. In the original, Galaxia simply wins and isn't defeated! Which I find very shocking. That's the only time the enemies essentially win. In Kaiteiban, she is, of course, defeated.
16th place: Le Mouvement Final (2017)
15th place: Amour Eternal (2016)
14th Place: Gaiden Dark Kingdom Fukkatsu Hen & Kaiteiban and short version that was not recorded (1993 - 1994)
13th place: Usagi Ai no Senshi e no Michi (1994)
It's the third arc, and many elements are missing, but I like what was done with it. The way the dreams of the inners are addressed. I thought the gondola scene with Usagi and Mamoru was very sweet. The little special elements like the soap bubbles and the small fire in Mars's hands are cool, and the way the actors fly around on a rope is cool.
12th place: Mugen Gakuen Misstress Labyrinth & Mugen Gakuen Misstress Labyrinth Kaiteiban (2002 - 2003)
11th Place: Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu & Kaiteiban Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu Marinamoon Final (2004 - 2005)
It's a remake of Kaguya Shima Densetsu, and it delves deeper into Atuka's backstory. Some elements from the original were removed, like King Endymion, or completely changed. I like the remake, but I prefer the original, especially Kaiteiban, because I like the cast better. Unfortunately, some songs that were in the original aren't in the remake, like my favorite love song by Usagi and Mamoru, "You are my Jewelry."
10th Place: Dracul Arc (2000 - 2001)
9th place: Tanjou Ankoku no Princess Black Lady & Kaiteiban Tanjou Ankoku no Princess Black Lady Wakusei Nemesis no Nazo (2001 - 2002)
8th Place: Eien Densetsu & Eien Densetsu the Final First Stage Kaiteiban (+ Senshuuraku) (1997 - 1998)
Like its predecessor, it deals with the Stars arc but very loosely. It is very funny, especially the Senshuuraku. In the Senshuuraku the fourth wall is often broken and there are many references to the previous musicals. You only understand the jokes if you have seen the earlier ones. The second arc is much more serious. I think it's cool that Queen Beryl of Galaxia is awakened and that she has a lot of character development here. The theme with Pluto and Beryl and her unrequited love for Endymion is also cool. The plot twist with Kyaos, who is the joke character but then turns out to be Chaos and thus the actual main villain. The curtain call at Senshuuraku and the final 30 minutes in general are very emotional because it's the last performance for many. Naoko Takeuchi even came on stage and hugged everyone. It was supposed to be the last musical ever, but due to its popularity, they continued.
7th Place: 10th Anniversary Festival Ai no Sanctuary (2002)
6th Place: Petite Éstrangère (2014)
5th place: Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin The Second Stage Final (2004)
It's my favorite musical of the fifth season and, in my opinion, much better than Starlight Ryuusei Densetsu. The story is more structured. Many of the dialogues are similar but occur in different places, and everything makes more sense to me. Marina doesn't overact as much. It's not as over the top as its predecessor. Mamoru is still annoying, but that's just the script. The senshi and Shitennou romance was cut. The songs I was hoping for were included here. I think it's a shame that more wasn't made of Saturn and that she didn't get a solo. They could have included "To Brand New World"; if the melody starts playing, why can't she sing it? Yes, the musical is already full of songs, but one more or less wouldn't have made a difference. More focus was placed on Pluto because it was the last musical with the Pluto actress, who was also very popular. (Pluto is my favorite senshi). The Pluto and Beryl theme is back. Princess Kakyuu appears, unlike Starlight Ryuusei Densetsu. I like the references to The Phantom of the Opera, which is also a musical I really like. (Yuu Shirota once played the Phantom lol) I wish the Senshuuraku had been recorded as well.
By the way, I don't think Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin Starlight Ryuusei Densetsu are similar. In my opinion, Kakyuu Ouhi Kourin is more based on Eien Densetsu. Many songs and elements were adopted, such as the Pluto and Beryl theme, the subordination of Uranus and Neptune to Galaxia, and Kakyuu's presence.
4th place: La Reconquista (2013)
Third Place: Nogizaka46 Version Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Musical (2018 - 2019, 2024)
Second Place: Kaguya Shima Densetsu & Kaiteiban Kaguya Shima Densetsu Natsuyasumi Houseki Tanken-Tai (1999)
First Place Yume Senshi Ai eien ni & Kaiteiban Yume Senshi Ai eien ni Saturn Fukkatsu (1995 - 1996)
