Sunshine
Princess Rapunzel’s feet drug against the floor as she walked back from the throne room. Rain beat against the windows of the palace. A maid was mopping up another leak.
No one had come for the day’s business, which was just as well. She didn’t really feel like trying to figure things out for people right now. It used to be a fun challenge, but not any more.
Eugene said it was because of the rain. It had rained for a couple of weeks on their adventure to the Dark Kingdom but this was different somehow. The first few days had been exciting because the rain was so intense it had caused some flooding in the kingdom, but that was under control now. Some people had to be evacuated and some homes had been lost but they could be replaced, the people were safe.
For the first two weeks people tried to go about their business as normal, more or less. They had had to scale down the holiday celebration because the fields were too soft for setting things up, and the palace courtyard wasn’t really big enough, and the few people that came, left quickly.
Now everyone stayed inside as much as possible. It was just too wet to do anything. Rapunzel slowly climbed the steps to her room. Pascal gave her some encouragement from time to time as he ducked under her short brown hair.
She considered making something as she ran her fingers along the edge of her desk, but there wasn’t really anything she wanted to make. She put her crown down on its pillow.
From her room’s window she could barely see the edge of the island much less the mainland. The world was a cold, wet grey.
It was a cold that sunk into her bones, and a wet that made everything feel moist and clammy.
Moving Cass’ latest letter from her book, Rapunzel picked up her current book from the nightstand and wrapped herself up tightly in her comforter. Pascal made himself comfortable and they cuddled down into the book.
“Oh man, it is wet out there!” Eugene said as he came in. He’d been saying that for a long time now.
She just kinda looked up at him.
“Is everyone okay, sunshine?” He asked kindly.
She shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m so tired but I’m not sleepy. I can’t seem to do anything. No one came for audiences today. Is everything alright out there?”
“Everything is as normal as it can be for all this rain. According to Xavier we’ve received as much rain in these three weeks as we normally do in three years. No home homes or building are threatened and Varian’s water diverters around the mills are holding.
“Xavier and Varian have been talking, this may be an effect of the Demanitus Device. Changing the weather those times may have done something that caused this rain to balance things out. Not like we can use the device again since it was destroyed but things should return to normal eventually. Xavier went on about legends of volcanos changing the weather in the past. So there is some credence to his idea. We just have to wait it out. It won’t last forever.”
“Okay. For some reason it feels so hard though.” Rapunzel said. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve been sad before, but this feels so different. Am I different now that I’m not the SunDrop anymore?”
“Hey, Sunshine. It’s okay. We haven’t seen the sun in a while and it is making a lot of people sad or angry. It happens. But the sun will come out again and there’ll be sunshine for all of us and we’ll be happy again. You know?”
Rapunzel gave him a smile and reached out an arm to hug him but the hug was squishy because of his wet uniform.
“Eww, you’ve soaked.”
“Yeah, sorry.” Then he gave her a wicked smile, “Let me get out of it for you.”
The Broken King of Corona
King Frederic is not much liked. I get that. He’s made a lot of not so great decisions, but I don’t think he’s a bad person because he does try to change once it is pointed out to him that he has made a bad decision.
King Frederic is a king, a kind introvert with a passion for eggs and a deep love for his family.
He loves deeply. Much like Elsa with Anna, his highest priority was protecting his family. He put the kingdom and world at risk to save his wife and child. Solve one problem at a time.
King Frederic loved Rapunzel deeply as a child and her kidnapping traumatized him. His passion for eggs disappeared. He suffers from auditory hallucinations in that he can relive the kidnapping all the time. He is compelled to close the windows.
In his guilt and shame for not protecting his daughter, he turned to rage against the criminal elements in the kingdom. Arresting and sending to the prison barge all manner of petty criminals. Including Lady Caine’s father.
I expect Queen Arianna stepped in, because that rage would easily have spread to any the king would have thought disloyal. We see her in the first season being very diplomatic and conciliatory, but she has fire in her soul so I am pretty sure she stopped Frederic from hurting more people to deal with his pain. And he did stop, not just that but he went further to eventually help give criminals second chances.
One of the hardest things for a king to get is honest feedback. A king has all the power and that makes it difficult for people to tell the king the truth without twisting it to cover their ass. Because telling a king the wrong thing may get you killed. Not that I think King Frederic is one of those but it is always an option. Like dealing with a customer that has an open-carry gun on their hip, it changes the relationship dynamic.
I also expect that the reason that he trusted Quirin so much was because Quirin told it too him straight. There should have been more to that relationship, but that is a different problem.
He had suffered an enormous amount of pain because of her kidnapping and didn’t have words to express or anyone to understand. The memory wand was probably one of the better things to happen to him, because it eased that pain, it might have been erased for a time but when it came back it wasn’t this live pain anymore and he could move on. I believe that he was trying to help Quirin and Varian, he failed but that was a separate problem. I doubt he was doing it himself because while he’s smart he’s not an expert in everything and what good is being a king of not to get experts to come when you ask.
He was also dealing with a deep depression. I don’t know how he was handling it but he was probably doing the work of a king by rote most of the time and leaning on Arianna a bit, though I am sure she was dealing with things her own way.
Something that gets overlooked is something that is a big deal. Frederic and Arianna didn’t have any more children. And any fan of monarchial systems knows that the most important thing a king and queen can do is make sure there is an heir. Arianna was completely healthy because she drank the Sunflower tea. Which means that Frederic was the problem. One symptom of deep depression is a lack of libido. While I am sure Arianna tried her best it looks like Frederic couldn’t do it. Which just makes the depression worse. Of course there would be people at court encouraging them to move on and have more children. Which wouldn’t help at all.
Once Rapunzel returned things changed but he was still deeply worried about her. Keeping lots of guards around her all the time. He lost her once and didn’t want to lose her again.
Yes, he lied to her about the black rocks and yes he tried to keep her from getting the graphtrix. But those were ways he was trying to protect her and stop more pain from coming to him. Most people try to avoid pain, so I don’t fault him for wanting to avoid pain and protect his lost daughter. Especially since he didn’t have access to someone who could tell him how to accept the pain. But in the end he gave Rapunzel his blessing to go find the source of the rocks and her destiny. He was willing to change and that means he was a good guy.
Happy Birthday! You're so awesome!
Awww shucks! 😊 Thanks so much for saying so, and for the wishes!!! 😁😄❤️
Slightly Spooky: A friend and I were teaching in Germany. On the way to a meaning, we got off a bus and crossed the street. A German Shepard was walking along the sidewalk and turned with us. It walked next to us like we'd been together for a decade. A German guy was trimming his hedge and said "Nice dog." Germans don't do that. The dog walked us to the church we met at. The dog left us at the door and disappeared.
Oh, wow... That’s... Definitely strange! What a nice dog, tho lmao
It’s the lil things that make this one kind of weird, innit?
