Review: “More Happy than Not” by Adam Silvera

Every once in a while, a book will surprise you. Not those that everyone raves about, that you see everywhere on booklr, that you read the blurb of and are sold immediately. No, a more quiet book - a hidden gem, a recommendation not everyone has on their lists, a book you add or buy only because someone recommended it, not particularly because you are 100% sold. And then it hits you and you love it through and through. It does not have to be epic, or magical, or even romantic, but it tugs at your heart strings and moves you and tells you a real stories that you get invested in. "More Happy than Not" is such a book. The coming out story of a poor boy with depression and self-harm issues, a complicated and pained family, a dysfunctional community and group of friends, a weird but realistic relationship with a girl, a slow realization and a big plot twist.

It is a book about finding one's identity, keeping secrets, being out and the dangers that brings with it. I loved it, every awkward teenage dialogue, every character, every slow development. Even the sci-fi element of the memory removal that plays such an important role was used really well to drive home to point about just how complicated coming out can be. The only thing that warrants the one star removed from the rating is the ending - I do not know if that was necessary from a narrative point of view. It did not seem to add much and left a lot open. Besides that detail though, it was absolutely amazing in its own low-key way.
