Laura Cunningham always wanted a little girl. A little girl who could take after her. Laura had never been one to shake her pom poms. No, she was going to be an Olympian. One of those famous gymnasts you see on cereal boxes and commercials. Everyone in Hawkins had big dreams. Bigger than what was attainable and at 17, Laura suffered a torn hamstring after a competition gone wrong. Her life suddenly halted and a marriage to Phillip Cunningham and two boys later, Christine Elizabeth Cunningham was born. Her younger brother followed suit a several years later, but Chrissy was the only girl. The only one that mattered in her mother’s eyes.
For her entire life, Chrissy has always been forced to do what others expect of her. Namely, by her mother. It was gymnastics on Monday, cheer on Tuesday, youth church on Wednesday, tutoring on Thursday, football games on Friday, pageants and competitions on Saturday, and morning service on Sunday. So many things were out of Chrissy’s control. Even when she began skipping lunch and drinking only Diet Coke’s as a meal, it was still fueled by her mother. No one noticed. Laura never noticed Chrissy losing weight and instead berated her about the one thing Chrissy was insecure about. Her dad always turned a blind eye to Laura’s comments or anything revolving around Chrissy’s life in general, unless it had to do with church choir or what boy she was dating.
Despite her home life, Chrissy has always been able to put on a brave face. She’s sensitive at her core, but at school she was always the girl with a smile on her face and a compliment to give someone. She’s probably one of the few people in Hawkins that still has a decent set of ethical morals, even if it is ruled mostly by her religious upbringing. It’s also left her naïve at times. Chrissy hasn’t experienced much outside of her bubble.
The last thing Chrissy remembers is going to Eddie Munson’s house to buy drugs. She has a vague remembrance of this horrendous nightmare, which she has always chalked up to being a bad trip thanks to Eddie’s Special K. She hasn’t really questioned why she ended up in the commune after that. Chrissy thinks it’s because she found it while high and was finally able to escape her life. It makes sense to her, at least!

HEADCANONS
Darla Johnson and Solomon Driscoll were never a couple that was truly in love. The pair met in high school and after a couple years of dating, found themselves pregnant with Virginia. They had a shotgun wedding and it came to no surprise when they announced their divorce when Virginia was five. She likes to think her parents spared her. They cut things off quick when she couldn’t even remember them being together, rather than having to pay for all the therapy bills if they had got a divorce when Ginny was older.
Ginny never had much of a relationship with her paternal grandparents. She never got a clear answer as to why. Sometimes her dad would take her out to Benny’s Diner to visit with her grandpa, but her grandma was always a bit of a mystery. The only semblance of an answer she got was that her grandma wasn’t well, that she was crazy, and that it was best for Virginia. After her grandmother’s death, she wondered if that was even true, but it’s not like she can go back in time.
Popular. It was a word that would never describe little Ginny Driscoll! She flew under the radar for most of high school. Smart, but not to the point of valedictorian. Quirky, but not to the point where it was noticeable. Kids were mean and she was more than happy to just pass them by as nothing more than a body in the hallway.
It came as no shock when Virginia decided to go to Penn State University in Pennsylvania. She had no clear ties to Hawkins other than her parents, so she packed her bags. The first night she was in her dorm, her roommate suggested going out to a party (and thank God for that!). High school Ginny would have never gone out to a party, but it was a freshman mixer, and her roommate just begged her to do a little makeover. The day Ginny was introduced to contacts and a curling iron changed her life. That night she came into her own. She was no longer little Ginny Driscoll who let people copy off her homework in the morning. She was Virginia, the freshman who could handle her liquor at night and still make it to her 8am in time.
A recent graduate, Virginia has made her way back to Hawkins like many of her other high school peers and she hasn’t had much of a luck finding a job. Her fault for majoring in two totally useless majors! For the time being, though, she’s mostly working part time at the Hawkins pool and being an absolute menace to anyone who has enough courage to talk to her!
[dacre montgomery, cis male, he/him] who’s that? oh it’s [billy hargrove]. i hear they’re [22] and are known as [the dirtbag] around [hawkins]. they’re known to be [charming & independent] and [competitive & unpredictable]. some people say they remind them of [the lingering smell of cigarette smoke long after the butt has been put out, bruises covering carved muscular abs, and a white lighter resting in a half empty marlboro pack]. they [do not] believe they died.
☆ Billy has been abused for as long as he can remember at the hands of his father. At first it started off small: yelling, spanking a little harder, even a shove every now and then. When it began, Billy thought it was his fault, that he had done something to bring it upon himself. It only seemed to happen after he did something. That was until one night when Neil came home from a particularly bad day of work. Billy hadn’t done anything wrong. He hadn’t even had the chance to greet his father when Neil pushed Billy’s mother out of the way, causing her to hit her head hard against the wall, and made a b line for Billy. It was the first time he hit him anywhere but the butt. Billy was eight. It only got worse from there and the older that Billy got, the more he internalized it, turning the pain into anger that he could direct at other people.
☆ Billy loves to surf, not that there’s really anywhere for him to do it in Indiana, or Hawkins especially. Surfing is connected to one of his core memories, one of the best and only memories that he has left of his mother when life was still good. That was before she left though, before things got dark. Surfing makes him feel like he’s flying, as if for that brief moment he’s riding the wave, he’s invincible and not even his father can touch him. It reminds him of his mother and always puts a smile to his lips when he’s coming out of the water.
☆ Billy has never actually been in a stable or loving relationship. Growing up, he didn’t have any role models for that sort of thing, only really being exposed to his parent’s relationship before his mother left and his father got remarried to Susan Mayfield. Not that he would ever admit it, but he’s scared to actually commit and open up to anyone romantically because he thinks that they’ll just end up leaving him too. So instead, he plays the field, only sticking around long enough to get what he wants before he’s gone again and pretending like the previous person never existed.
☆ The last memory that Billy has is walking out the front door of his house towards his 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, ready to meet Karen Wheeler for private swimming lessons at the Motel 6 like they had agreed to that afternoon. Billy was usually indifferent towards the older women, watching as they gawked at him while he worked his lifeguarding shift at the Hawkins Community Pool, but Karen Wheeler had been different. Not only was she the hottest mom in all of Hawkins, I mean come on she was Nancy Wheeler’s mom, but there was something about her approach that was less direct and caught his attention. Private lessons were the least of his concerns that night, anticipating something else entirely to happen.

the basics
Calvin Cunningham was a delicate child if you asked his mother. Smaller than Chance, and always the first one in the family to bring a cold home from school. He was never going to be athletic like either of the siblings he was closest to in age; he certainly didn’t have the strength or stamina. Cal was tiny, with a weak constitution, a thin frame and a lack of coordination. So instead of trying to embrace sports, Cal decided to look for his strengths elsewhere. He paid attention in school, asked plenty of questions and always raised his hand to give an answer. It wasn’t long before his teachers noticed how truly smart Cal was - and it went entirely to his head.
When he was young, Cal had a knack for running his mouth off and getting himself in trouble with much bigger kids. It wasn’t uncommon for him to say something rude and get himself beat up throughout elementary and middle school. He thought of most of his classmates as idiots, especially the school jocks. Any time someone asked a question that Cal thought had an obvious answer, he had a hard time keeping a straight face. He certainly was not popular with his classmates, which only fueled his belief that it was because he was too intelligent for them.
But he wasn’t the only smart kid in school; not by a longshot. Cal knew Beth Richards through their families - their siblings had dated for most of high school. She was just as smart as him, although he refused to acknowledge that at first. For years in school, he did everything he could to one up her in classes. If Beth got a 98 on an assignment, he had to get a 100. If she answered three questions in class, he had to answer four. He was obsessed with beating her, until he realized that maybe he was just obsessed with her. Not in a creepy way, but….well, Cal liked her a lot. She was smart and artistic and sweet and completely in love with Chance, which made Cal want to scream. When he realized that the one girl he’d ever felt strongly about loved his dumb jock older brother instead of him? Well, he sulked about it a lot. But he did what he could to get her to notice him. He tried harder in art class, he asked her to study together for tests. When she missed school for a week in sophomore year because she got the flu, Cal brought her her books so she wouldn’t get behind. He fell for the middle Richards child, but she never noticed him.
By the time he got in high school, Cal knew he wanted to get out of Hawkins, Indiana. He wanted to go to a prestigious school, somewhere where his intelligence would actually be challenged. So, he made it his mission to take the hardest classes and join the most activities he could. Captain of the Debate Team, Model UN President, member of the Hawkins High newspaper staff, Anatomy Club President, Art Club, anything and everything he could do to add to his college applications. It didn’t matter if he liked it or not - if it would help him get noticed, he did it.
And it paid off when he got a partial scholarship to Notre Dame, one of his first-choice schools. He was going to study History and Pre-Law; this would be a stepping stone on his way to the White House. Cal was smart, successful, a great public speaker, and had a pretty face - how could he not be president one day? If Reagan could do it, anyone with half a brain could. So, he threw himself into classes, coming home seldom and ignoring calls from his family most of the time. He had to get ahead - checking in on them could wait, especially since his mom only cared about him now because he was going to such a good school.
When he got the news that Chrissy had died, Cal had locked himself in his dorm room for days. All of a sudden, everything that he’d been working towards felt so meaningless, like a switch had flipped. Who gave a fuck about him staying up until 3 am to practice for Public Speaking class? Who cared that he had straight A’s? What did any of it matter anymore when Cal couldn’t even remember the last time he’d spoken to Chrissy? He didn’t know what their last words even were. He couldn’t even guess.
He spiraled for a bit, working through his grief as best as he could. Cal switched majors, feeling like there was just no point in being a politician. Not when he saw how shitty of a job they were doing with Hawkins following Chrissy’s death. Cal felt sick with himself for how ambitious and fake he’d always been - how cruel he’d been to people he didn’t even know. Becoming Pre-Health was the only thing he could think of that seemed like it might be penance for the way he’d always treated people growing up. Maybe he could use his intelligence to become a doctor, help others who needed it since he couldn’t be there for his sister anymore. Cal worked just as hard as always, but now he channeled that ambition into doing something good for others for once.
When he’d heard Chrissy had come back from the forest commune, Cal had been confused but happy. He doesn’t remember that she died, so while the story is weird, he believes it. He’s come back to Hawkins now to be with her, and he’s working as an EMT to help get practical experience before he applies for med schools next year. Cal is no longer the biggest dick in Hawkins; he’s grown up and matured a lot. That doesn’t mean that he still won’t have a sarcastic comment or two though, nor is he suddenly on the best terms with his older brother. Maybe things can get better, though. Cal will just have to wait and see.
the headcanons
this man is left handed
his parents virtually ignored his existence growing up because their dad is aloof at best, and their mom was so focused on chrissy. that, plus cal not being a jock and being an overachiever, meant that he was firmly feeling the middle child syndrome.
cal used to be such a fucking asshole in high school. like, he’s heavily inspired by ben from never have i ever in that he was an overachiever who belittled those around him, unless he had a soft spot for you. i’m not sure he had many friends, he probably referred to people as his acquaintances mostly.
just at his core a very, very lonely boy growing up who always felt like he had to prove that he deserved to take up space in the world.
he was involved in a million clubs and activities. if hawkins offered it, he probably tried it for at least a semester to put it on his college transcript.
barely came home during college before chrissy’s death, but made the effort to more for his younger brother’s sake after she died.
when chrissy died, cal became a slightly better person. he’s still sarcastic at times and quiet and condescending, but now he’s also a lot more thoughtful.
working as an emt so if you get hurt, hit up cal. fuck max mayfield for stealing his ambulance at the carnival.
used to want to go into politics but then went ‘fuck that’ when chrissy died.
he’s currently dating ginny driscoll but it’s rocky at best.
still has a very strained relationship with chance and doesn’t make an effort to make it better.
wears contacts but used to have glasses. they still make an appearance every now and then.
demisexual as far as sexuality. in terms of who he finds romantically attractive, he’s bi !! had things with guys and gals !!

HEADCANONS
nancy never thought leaving hawkins would be hard. she had always dreamed of going to college and meeting new people, people who weren’t like the residents of hawkins. people who were intelligent, like her, and cared about their grades… like her. but with an early acceptance to emerson college, her goodbyes came swiftly after graduation, and it actually hurt. she never thought she’d get teary eyed hugging her family goodbye after they sent her on her way to boston, but she did. maybe because she feared that the next time a monster came around, she wouldn’t be there for it.
a few weeks into her first classes at emerson, she began to settle down. the dread and fear of hawkins began to settle down. she joined the newspaper club, joined a sorority, made friends, and kept up with her studies. it was like everything she had dreamed of was finally coming somewhat true. she still missed everyone, but that hole was slowly being filled, especially when she realized that there were no more monsters coming out from the upside down. they were truly safe.
for the past few years, nancy hasn’t really gone home. as much as she’d like to believe that hawkins is safe, there was always a nagging feeling in her that said, “if you go back, something will happen.” so, she’s always made her trips home small and quick. occasional pop ins for holidays, like thanksgiving or christmas, but when spring or summer break hits, she’s usually off to the beach with her sisters or picking up summer courses. this summer is the first time she’s truly gone home for summer. i guess you can’t ignore hawkins forever, right?

*PERSONALITY (SUMMARIZED)
looking back on who he was during high school, steve is but a shadow of that person. aside from his sarcasm and recklessness, most of his traits that he displayed during high school have disappeared. he no longer is an unnecessary jerk to people, although he won’t hesitate on defending the people he cares about. he’s still the same old confident and charming king steve, but without being an asshole.
*HEADCANONS
after everything seemed to settle down, steve got back together with nancy, against all odds. he kept his job at the video store and he couldn’t be happier. however, it always felt like something was missing and after a few conversations with nancy, she actually convinced him to enroll in some classes at community college. it took him some time to adjust to the college life, since it was so different from high school – there wasn’t exactly a hierarchy that he could climb to the top of, but now that a year has passed, he likes to think that he’s actually doing pretty well. he isn’t the best student, but it’s not like he’s failing either.
while everything seemed to go well with college, he couldn’t say the same thing for his relationship. he had finally gotten the girl he wanted, but a few months into their relationship, steve felt like something wasn’t right about it - but he didn’t want to break nancy’s heart. the truth is that steve doesn’t know what he wants… or what he’s into, for that matter. he still thinks he’s attracted to women, but joining college made him realize that there’s more to this world… mostly when he saw all of the men at community college. after pondering on his life, steve decided it would be for the best if he broke up with nancy, at least while he tried to figure things out.
and while some things have changed, there has been one thing that steve couldn’t let go of: “his kids”. the endless hours of babysitting that he had done with el, max, will, mike, dustin and lucas, in order to keep them alive from the upside down, only made him protective of the kids… some would say overprotective even. while they’re all grown up now, steve can’t help it but to check on them whenever he can, making sure that they’re alright and that they aren’t getting into trouble. it can get overbearing at times, but steve does it with good intentions.

This couldn’t possibly be an escape attempt, but she would by lying to herself. Suzie’s disappearance was enough reason to make the long trek from Salt Lake City to Hawkins, Indiana. Two months passing as she made her way into an existing life in this small town. The silence was deafening at times ( no screaming kids… sometimes she missed Cornelius and his antics ). Missing her six siblings was one thing. Missing the atmosphere surrounding their mundane lives was another subject completely. After their mother passed, Eden was forced to take on the maternal role of raising her brothers and sisters. And resentment slowly built over the years.
Not when it came to her siblings, it wasn’t their fault. No the strict hand of their father was constant and suffocating. Spending more time within his locked office than dealing with the screaming hysterics running amok. Eden has lost her voice on more than one occasion whilst ‘ rearing the littles ‘. Sometimes she allowed the chaos to take control of the house - it’s not like their dad noticed ( only when Cornelius got ahold of the electrical breaker ). Even though he became distant, no doubt due to their mom’s death, he taught her how to shoot and even use a crossbow. He always hoped for a boy and Eden wasn’t going to let him down. Being rough and tough was now ingrained, it also helped to control the rug rats - sometimes.
Rebellion was her only option in Utah, her clothes darkening and the tattoos covered. After all, what would their religious community react to a Bingham that seemed already defiled. Still, this was her only way of having bodily autonomy. Her dad hardly noticed. Which made escaping into the nearest neighborhood with her friends, experimenting with Mary Jane for the time being. It was a close knit circle of the Black Sheeps in their community where conformity was a NECESSITY.
Finding out the Suzie left, no doubt to Hawkins, she immediately packed a bag. Her brothers and sisters were old enough that they didn’t have to be kept such a close eye on. Besides they were clearly able to cook and fend for themselves for the time being. Or else this would be a hard life lesson that her dad had to get shit together. But now Eden has recently found work as a florist. With a bit of a side hustle in other herbs.
Hawkins may be a small town, but it’s still the only freedom Eden as known. Leaving Utah only once before - when their mother was still alive and Disneyland really was the happiest place on earth. Being here has lead her to finding a bit of truth. She is queer and has recently been studying herbal medicine ( mostly at the Hawkins Library ) and also acquired her first tarot deck. Knowing damn well her father would have a heart attack if he ever looked up from his computer screen for more than five minutes.

Jonathan eventually moved back to Hawkins and enrolled in community college. He worked part-time at Melvand’s General Store to pay his tuition and save for a new car. This seemed like the most rational course of action, after everything, but he soon found himself picking up whatever shifts he could get – day shifts, night shifts, overtime shifts – until he was paralyzed by mountains of unwritten exams and a letter stating the terms of his academic probation. Jonathan was too embarrassed to talk about his financial and school troubles with anyone, especially his family, so he quietly dropped out of college and has been working at Melvand’s ever since. Although he’s embarrassed about dropping out, he is happy to feel somewhat financially stable and now rents his own apartment in town. Jonathan can’t help but wonder what his life would look like if he stayed in college. The thought of spending his entire life in Hawkins terrifies him and he wants to do something that gives his life purpose – and be a good role model for Will.
Jonathan kept in touch with Argyle, but weekly phone calls turned into monthly calls until the phone stopped ringing altogether. One day he’d like to venture back out to California and visit his old friend but he’s not sure they’ll have much in common anymore. Jonathan stopped smoking once he moved back to Hawkins since his work schedule left no room for error or lazy mornings with a bong. Overall, he’s felt better and more level-headed.
Jonathan scrapped up enough cash to purchase a used 1972 Ford Ltd. It is not identical to the dusty grey car he had back in high school, but it is less beat-up. The pale green exterior is starting to grow on him.
Every Friday night, Jonathan picks up a horror film from the local video store. He feels weird about loving thrillers and slashers, especially after experiencing the horror of Will’s disappearance and the upside down, but he loves the thrill this weekly ritual brings to his boring weekends.
