I try telling myself that I’ll be alright But at the end of the day, it’s you again
BTOB(비투비) - Missing You Review
Keep in mind this is all my opinion, so please respect it.
So I decided to share my opinion on the song and it’s MV because I have so much to say about this. Idk where to start bc it was all a masterpiece (stan BTOB).
Okay so first of all, I’m not a big fan of ballads in general and I also really don’t like songs about breakups or love songs and such, but i think BTOB had this whole thing planned out and put it together nicely. Like, I can’t help but listen to the song and long for something unknown. So building off of this, lets talk about the lyrics and get it out of the way.
The vocal unit had very repetitive but simple lines that served the purpose of getting straight to the point, but maintained the catchiness that is usually brought forward in more “pop-y” songs. We must however, acknowledge the meaningful words that were put forward. This point i really important bc it’s one of the main reasons that I enjoy kpop/Korean music.
Here’s an example:
I was missing you and another day passed I was missing you and another year passed This is how I live As I long for you, long for you
Simple, straightforward, and yet they give you such a heavy feeling. The melody of the song plays such an important role in provoking emotion, be it sadness or anger. The tune continuously gives off the slow feeling of the ballad throughout (piano), but it still has some sort of a ‘happy’ or upbeat mood(the snapping sound in the background, the drums, and the mix of violins and the guitar). This ambivalence that we’re subjected to also builds up a feeling of nostalgia for a simpler time (or maybe it’s just because the song takes me back to the early 2000s). This idea as a whole is highlighted most prominently towards the end of the song after Minhyuk’s hardcore rap ends, where the chanting starts.
Moving on to the rap, evidently it’s where the angry men come in. But it gives more of a detail to the anger that you feel when listening to them.
I’ll let it all out so I can feel relieved But it’s alright to care about what happened in the past When I think I can see the answer Sometimes, it becomes a prison that traps me But time only goes forward And I’ve done nothing
Sad, I know. But can we talk about how beautiful of a picture this paints?? Like, he’s stuck in the past but its happening in the present, and time only continues to pass by, there’s no looking at the future at this point. Again the sort of uplifting or happy mood is held, regardless of the sadder meaning behind the words. In other words, Ilhoon and Peniel’s rap verses feel much more laid back and to some extent joyful because of the manner in which they’re rapping and the background music. They stray from the basic idea of the “angry” rapper in the sense that they’re sing-rapping and not spilling their guts, the background music changes from the entirety of the instruments being used to mostly the acoustic guitar.
Minhyuk on the other hand, delivers the breakdown of the song, in which he’s sort of required to show a lot of emotion vocally. I think this part really suited him because although his slow talking voice is really calming, it’s barely heard during the live shows. Also he has a really nice rasp to it. Also, out of all three rappers, his voice is most suited for more anger-filled lyrics (as we’ve heard in I’ll Be Your Man). Here, as it’s the build-up of the song, all instruments are used in the background to make it more chaotic or full, and sort of brings on a feeling of anxiousness and unease that is later relived during the chanting part.
Can I just mention how much I love Changsub’s vocals in this song, and how perfectly allocated his lines are???!
Okay, okay I’m almost done i just gotta talk about the MV bc the filmography is perfect.
So the undertones of the scenes alternate between a warm orange that radiates safety or coziness and supports the idea of nostalgia, and a cold blue that showcases the more real aspect of sadness and loneliness. The director really did an amazing job in presenting the personalities of each of the members appropriately (i.e. Hyunsik’s calm and warm atmosphere, Ilhoon’s more outwardly aggressive anger that eventually subsides, Sungjae’s “calm before the storm”, Eunkwang who’s drowning in his feelings, Peniel who takes his anger out physically working out, nothing too bad, Minhyuk who blames it on himself I guess(?), and Changsub who holds it in till he blows.)
If I’m honest, the scene with Changsub finally letting it all out and running down the street screaming was the part that really got to me. Sungjae did a great job at preparing me for it, but i literally cried at that part. ALSO HELLO THE LAST LINES WHICH WERE GRACIOUSLY DELIVERED BY SUBBY I LOVE THOSE. I’m sorry I know I talked a lot about Changsub, but i felt like this MV really made him shine. All the members did, but he stood out for some reason.
Anyway, I think it’s safe to say that this is one of BTOB’s best songs. Possibly the song of the year alongside Move by Taemin :’).
BTOB’S BEEN GIVING US ART SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME BUT Y’ALL STILL USE THEM AS A BED.
STOP SLEEPING ON THEM. STAN TALENT.

his laugh is everything
i’m already crying, my heart ain’t ready for this
side note/q: are they merging all the piece of btob mv/song stories???
