SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR as BUFFY SUMMERS Buffy the Vampire Slayer | 4.02 "Living Conditions"
This right here is both the a key origin for Dark Willow, and the wound that she and Buffy keep giving each other throughout their friendship. Buffy’s tragic flaw is pushing her friends away and not trusting that community will save her. Willow’s is wanting to help as an equal. In the narrative she *is* a sidekick. But she’s a main character in her own story. And the only way she can think of to be helpful, to be an equal with Buffy, is magic. Xander struggles in the same way post high school, but Willow throws herself into magic to fix the imbalance rather than voicing it. Thus is a huge part of why I really don’t buy that Willow is a bad friend. There are just ways that both she and Buffy show up in friendship that doesn’t mesh, and they’re traumatized children who never talk about it. Anyway, I love Willow.
