Like all great EPIC romances, there was as much darkness in Buffy & Angel's love story as there was light. Buffy loved Angel more than she ever loved anything in her life (direct quote) but she someone she didn't allow loss & pain to consume her. She retained her light, found her way out of the dark...and in doing so...helped Angel do the same.
And you didn't stop loving him. Look, lots of people lose themselves in love. It's, it's no shame. They write songs about it. The hitch is, you can't stay lost. Sooner or later, you... you have to get back to yourself.

They were heroes. It's equally selfless & tragic. Which is exactly who Buffy & Angel were together...and separate.
