Hanging Flower Arrangement

An up-close shot of some Black-Eyed Susan flowers arranged with leaves and stems of other plants. The arrangement is hung from the eaves of the Buaiso Restaurant & Cafe in Machida, Tokyo, Japan—part of the Buaiso historic residence.

Possibly dating as far back as 1942, in-season flowers and plants are selected from the home’s English garden and warmly put on display using this old, rusty hanging flower holder.

Buaiso Restaurant and Cafe (Machida, Tokyo, Japan)

One of the six structures at the Buaiso residence, a registered historic home in Machida, Tokyo, Japan, (circa late 1800s to early 1900s), has been converted into a restaurant and cafe.

Lunch offers a choice of shrimp curry or chicken curry on rice, rice omelet, Thai gapao rice, or a traditional Japanese dish of oyakodon (chicken and egg on rice). These were some of the favorite dishes of the late owner—Jiro Shirasu and his wife Masako Shirasu.

Dinner is a reservation-only formal affair with dress codes, and a price tag to go with it.

Enjoying lunch here with a view of the garden must be especially beautiful during spring when the cherry trees are in full bloom!

Traditional Japanese Grinding Bowl used for Summer Decoration

The garden at the Buaiso residence (circa late 1800s to early 1900s) in Machida, Tokyo, Japan, has a suribachi (Japanese grinding bowl) that is being used as a decoration.

I often see temples and shrines with water basins, stone bowls, etc, that are filled with water and have seasonal flowers and leaves placed inside for decorative purposes. I love this kind garden decoration, which makes me feel a bit cooler during the hot and humid days of summer.

The suribachi have been in used in Japanese kitchens since at least 1000 AD. The glazed bowl has rough, unglazed patterns backed into this type of pottery bowl. A wooden pestle (surikogi) made from Japanese prickly ash (sansho tree) is used to grind ingredients like black sesame seeds. The pestle made from the prickly ash tree is said to add a slight flavoring to the food.

Antique Garden Spigot

The garden at the Buaiso residence (circa late 1800s to early 1900s) in Machida, Tokyo, Japan, has many unique items dating back to 1942 and much earlier.

The overtly large garden tap features an acorn motif on top, which reflects the influence that the English gardens of British aristocracy had on the owner—Jiro Shirasu, who studied at the University of Cambridge from 1923.
