The Spirits of the Catacombs of Lancaster, PA
Bube’s Brewery in Lancaster, PA, is the one the oldest breweries in the US, and the only intact one from the 19th century. It’s age makes it all the more creepy, as paintings of past owners stare at you from their place on crumbling gallery walls. Today, the multi-building site contains several restaurant dining experiences, an escape room, and hosts murder mystery dinners. But it most known locally for its ancient cellar, the Catacombs.
Located down a long flight of stairs, 43 feet below street level, is a dining room enclosed in thick stone walls. Now know as the Catacombs, this cellar once housed the final steps of the brewing operation. It is dark, and cold, and offers a unique sense of dread at the fact that there’s only one sure way out, and it’s a staircase that descends the height of a 3 story home. It seems like the perfect breeding ground for the paranormal, but the only spirits to be found there are in the drinks.
That cannot be said for the rest of the Bube’s Brewery complex, however. The apparition of a young woman in a dress has been seen by both staff and customers, wandering the upstairs gallery area. Many people have reported feeling a person’s presence in the second floor bathroom, and voices have been heard and recorded speaking English and what sounds like German. Bube’s Brewery does offer ghost tours, but who, or what, is haunting this 150 year old brewery remains a mystery.
