hello this is a reply to @actuallymartymcfly ‘s post about the japanese light novels! i sat down and translated everything and "localized" (i wanted to keep the og japanese phrasing/wording prevalent) it the best i could!

part 1 doesn’t really have anything new it’s a very basic synopsis though i will say idk why lorraine had to catch a stray like that

part 2 however what i think is cool is that marty’s the one explaining the story for a bit! its only the last part where it goes back to third person. the rest is written with masculine personal pronouns; the same ones marty uses in jp dubs! i thought that was cute

i also think it’s sweet they redefine george by his accomplishments of his dreams

being a marty fan is so funny when im trying to be productive esp with academic related things "marty would have finished off his college application by now!" no he wouldn't. that man opens an essay writes the first 4 words and then goes off and writes 4 entire 12-song albums!!!!!!!!

so in other words back to drawing i go

yapping about my experience with the japanese dub 4DX screening of bttf!!

so as i'm sure i've mentioned i am half-japanese, and last month i went to go see BTTF in theaters during it's week-long screening here in japan!

if you'd be so kind to indulge me i'd like to yap about some of the key differences in the japanese dub of the film! (subs are just direct translations of the english dialogue, but the dub had some localization differences/dialogue swaps that i thought were interesting!) more found under the cut cause this is really long :3

DISCLAIMER: though i'm fluent in japanese it is my second language so i might be a little bit off with some of the nuances that native speakers would pick up on + it's been about a month since i watched the dub! so take this as some light-hearted fun that i noticed and not as gospel i could just be too marty pilled and get things wrong whoops :333 i love being whimsical!

additionally, japan has about ~4 seperate dubs for bttf, so just for clarification i'll be talking about the 2025 40th anniversary cinema dubbing!

okay so the movie itself. in 4DX. bro. i cried multiple times. the chairs moved in conjunction with when marty was on his skateboard + driving the delorean and it was so awesome!!! they shot pressurized air behind you for every gunshot; they flashed lights and turned on the fans during the storm scene. i was so like. bro. oh my goobness. when marty goes back to 1955? don't even get me started. they flung us around so hard i swear i was in that car bro.

they also? splashed water at you? when marty spit out the booze?? why would you spit that all over me man. i was eating popcorn.

okay now to the juicy stuff (dialogue differences) + why i am a firm believer that specifically in the japanese versions of back to the future marty is wasian.

for your consideration here are some broad things i noticed:

marty uses masculine/rougher japanese, while doc uses formal/doctor-esque(technical words etc.) japanese! (the mispronunciation of gigawatt is kept as is) george and lorraine use standard japanese, with lorraine using very feminine language (ですわ, etc.) biff (1955) speaks simililarly but slightly more formal than marty; twin pine 1985 biff keeps this speech pattern, but lone pine speaks extremely formal japanese, referring to george as "Mister. (Lord of the House) McFly" and marty using the word for like. a noble son of the class above you.

this comes with any foreign-language dub but whenever there was english text on the screen without marty's face, marty would read out that english in japanese. for example, on the shot of the phone sign at lou's, marty said ("looks like there's a phone there i could use") okay adventure game protagonist

other than that everything was kind of the same/nothing notable :3 now here's some localization stuff!!!

biff/strickland refer to george/marty using their first name; mcfly is used maybe once or twice - this is probably just a culture difference; surnames are used in polite situations and a first name would be used when trying to be rude. the cafe scene where biff first comes in, he calls "mcfly" to allow both marty and george to turn around, but for the rest of the scene and film he refers to george by george. unfortunately this does take away from that first scene a little since george is referred to as george DIRECTLY after mcfly so we as the viewer/marty never comes to that conclusion himself

the localisation of 'don't be such a square' - this isn't that big but i'm gonna bring it up later!! in japanese the phrase "don't say such rigid(strict) things!" is used instead of this!

marty is just darth vader - he never follows up with "i am from the planet vulcan" he just says "i am an alien from outer space named darth vader". gonna guess this is prob just cause star trek wasn't that huge in japan i guess?

butthead is never said - they just do not substitute butthead and instead have biff ask "why are you looking at me like i'm an idiot?"

all the songs are kept in their original english recording - power of love is kept in english, that's fine, normal even. what really got me is the fact that earth angel and johnny b goode used their original english recordings. i nearly spat out my drink laughing hearing fluent japenese for the past like hour to be suddenly greeted by a complete 180 into perfect american english that ONLY appeared for the songs. they are dubbed in the japanese version of the musical so i thought that'd carry over but it was still awesome!!!!

good morning wasian marty truthers - bttf uses a lot of 80s/50s slang that's used as a language barrier between marty and the other characters. unfortunately japan doesn't have a direct translation for this, so the joke is now that marty mixes english in with his japanese. for example, he will say ヘビー(heavy written in katakana) instead of 重い(おもい) (jp word for heavy) and doc will say "what is 'ヘビー'; do you mean 重い? why is everything so heavy in the future is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?" -- this is why i headcanon JP BTTF marty to be wasian / learns english from doc (gigawatt is kept in english)

^ this joke is also done in the cafe scene, where marty will ask for a タブ(tab in katakana) and a pepsi フリー(free in katakana) to which lou will correct for the japanese words for the bill/free

NOW THE BIG ONE. THAT MOVED ME TO TEARS. WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT.

alright i'm sure we're all familiar with the lone pine scene where marty comes back and cries over doc dying again in front of him. the dialogue exchange between doc and marty when doc gets back up is like. completely changed. why did they do this.

from my memory (and 7 million texts i sent to my friends after the film) this is the rough translation from the point the dialogue deviates:

-- Doc pulls out the ripped-up letter, weathered and taped back together. He hands it to Marty as the latter reads over in disbelief.

"This is bad, Doc! What about all that talk you told me about changing the future? The space-time continuum? This could get us in a lot of trouble! You could have put yourself in more danger!"

(what about all that talk about the space-time continuum etc.)

"Oh, don't be such a square." -- (aforementioned usage of 'strict language' which would be localized into don't be such a square)

(i thought, what the hell)

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. ARE YOU SERIOUS. GOD. THEIR FRIENDSHIP IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME.

there are other really minor dialogue deviations i noticed but i would genuinely be here for a few hours if i did a deep dive into every line they changed/interesting localizations so i will leave it at that!!

if you like really think about it bttf has the same canon versatility as like hatsune miku in the sense that you could genuinely just make any version of them say “it’s just a different timeline” and everyone would stand up and clap and i think that’s so beautiful

this is my first time like actively participating in fandom stuff and i'm SO GLAD this community is so uplifting of one-another... i love seeing everyone's au's... i love seeing everyone's art for my au.... it makes me tweak out every time i see anything IM CRYING

if i may take this ask as an opportunity to flesh out the idea a bit more.... like i said i never intended for this to be a whole thing it was just an answer to an ask from the amazing @musicchan so thank them for giving me the idea! <3

after some consideration i think (SUBJECT TO CHANGE I AM VERY INDECISIVE) i have a general outline for how the au would come into fashion................. UNDER THE CUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (clapping)

like i said in my doc/marty reference sheets i t hink this takes place directly after the telltale game with those 3 older marties at the end... stay with me here...

THIS guy is 1985a marty grown up into what would be 2015a. stay the fuck with me hold my hand.

his dialogue really sticks with me here... coughs... "We meet at last!" he hasn't been able to tail when his alternate selves are. also note that this is absolutely 2015 marty. 2015 is 30 years away from 1985. doc said the delorean took him 30 years to build. if he started in 1985a......... YOU SEE WHERE I'M GOING..........

what about the money you may ask? well it just so happens that this marty has access to the Richest Man On Planet Earth. you cannot tell me 1985a marty doesn't know how to at least steal a bit. or continue """""going to"""" """"""""""school""""""""" to take biffs money. its not like he's keeping track of it anyways

additionally what i find really interesting is that he just completely ignores teen marty and doc instead going directly toward the other old martys........ he says "you've altered my timeline one too many times" and then threatens them with "prepare to be erased" HELLO? HELLO???????????? HELLO????????????????

as much as i'd like to make citizen evil evil martin the ""main"" villain i think i'll do that in his original au where doc is the one who makes it to citizen valley in telltale and marty dissapears.... i think martymania's main antagonist is 1985a->2015a marty however i think both 1985a and citizen will be general nuisances to doc and marty's adventures for varying reasons

WHY you may ask? well this marty has no clue that the almanac is what caused hell valley to become well. hell valley. so he's trying to find out where and most importantly when it all went wrong. i don't think doc joins him out of pure risk assessment. doc is gonna be in every single year leading up from 55-85, marty won't

obviously the space-time continuum is in danger WOW WHO WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT COMING as doc / one of the future marties(sp?) imply

"If anything, the space-time continuum should be tearing apart like a cheap dishrag right now"

"It is! That's what you've gotta come back with me!" (why they need to go Back to the Future™ is something i need to think abt a bit more) (PREMATURELY POSTED THIS WHOOPS IF YOU SEE THIS EDIT THATS WHY I CANT DELETE IT CAUSE ITS AN ANSWER TO AN ASK HELP)

(ALSO SIDE NOTE THE CONCEPT OF MARTY NO MATTER WHAT AGE/TIMELINE HE'S IN RUNNING TO DOC WHEN HE'S IN TROUBLE DON'T TALK TO ME.)

anyways so that bit ends with marty being like "WHICH ONES THE REAL ME" (none of them babyboy your future is not written) and doc saying "isn't it obvious/forget the future have a present to catch up on" what and then they hit the "where to, doc?" "mr mcfly, thrill me" they're so friendship papa and son bro uncle and bro nephew bruncle and brephew

AND THEN THE AU STARTS YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE i think marty travels back to 55 just to quadruple-check he hasn't accidentally messed something up there again. i mean he/doc weren't fading away so what's actually going on

at some point he and doc get seperated and then we get the whole martymania thing with regular marty meeting teen 1985a and citizen martin

thats kind of where i'm at. this au is just for silly shenanigans i fear i just thought itd be fun to imagine a telltale sequel for the hell of it why not......... :3 thank you for the ask! i love your art and your aus so much................................... idk if i say that enough but i do. <3 your marty succeeds in taking the almanac au? fanart coming soon. this is a friendly threat. that au/ holy shit your mind i love it sm
