this wasn’t jaq’s first hare-brained scheme gone wrong. back in her twenties she’d been much more reckless than she was now, getting herself into sticky situations more often than she’d like to admit. it was all a part of growing up, she thought. making dumb mistakes and learning from them in order to come out the other side smarter, stronger, and more careful. for years now, jaq had been running her scams like a well oiled machine. not so much as a hiccup holding her back from pulling off a con. maybe it’s because she’d let the other get involved that things became messy. nothing this bad had ever happened when she was working alone. either way, she simply couldn’t wish away the stiff body laying between them. she had to do something. “stay calm, ok? just don’t worry about it.” already she’s dragging the body off to the bathroom, using what little muscle she had to heave him into the tub. “i’m gonna take care of it, you just do what i say.” wiping the blood on her hands off on a hand towel, jaq grasped her partner’s cheeks with both hands. “look at me. nothing bad is gonna happen, ok? we’re gonna fix this, and then we can go get a drink and pretend it never happened.”
