Can I be real?
Aside from the accessibility issues, and, y'know, the Buddie symbolism of it all...I don't really get the hate Buck's loft gets??
People are always calling it "cold" and "impersonal", and I just don't perceive it that way at all!!
Like, yeah, maybe it could benefit from a big overstuffed couch and possibly a bookshelf and a house plant, but the colors and lighting are warm and inviting! The exposed brick and large windows are visually engaging!
Possibly even more controversial opinion...I actually feel like the furnishing/decor in the Bedford St. house... kinda sucks. To me, that is way more cold and impersonal!!! Absolutely nothingburger of a dwelling.
Why are there no colors??? Why is it decorated like a furniture store?????
I mean, I do find, in general, the set dressing of the show to be very "catalogue photo shoot" in tone. Most of the homes we see are quite bland in a slightly trendy way.
It's just frustrating, bc, especially in an ensemble show like 9-1-1, the homes could be such a nice way to deepen and expand the characterization! In addition to being simply more visually interesting, it would also be a way to increase the amount of information being conveyed without taking screentime away from anything else.
Like, I mean, you can see that a few attempts were made. Some framed photos, some fridge magnets, etc. But they're very half-hearted attempts.
I simply don't believe Eddie is the kind of dude who would spend money putting large, monochromatic paintings of simplified sports men on his walls. Maybe images or references to specific sports men? Or teams??
tbh, I feel like Eddie and Chris's home ought to look way less put together and purposefully decorated. But also homier and more lived in! The Diaz house gets, like, half a pass for being too clean bc you could argue mobility issues, but that really only applies to stuff on the floor... you can have mess other places!!
But, like. Literally every main character's home looks like they paid someone to decorate it, and then they pay someone to tidy it once a week.
Like, is there a single main character whose favorite color we can identify? Obviously not all adults have a favorite color, (🙄) but, given the size of cast, and the amount of time we, as viewers, have spent with them, there should be at least a couple characters who we know gravitate towards certain color groups, or color schemes, or something.
The closest I can think of is that, for years, Christopher was always wearing stripes. But I think this was less of a personal characterization choice, and more because someone at some point was taught that colorful striped shirt = child. (Particularly one who is wholesome and possibly a little nerdy) They're only starting to shift him to plaid now to indicate that he's a teenager.
Which, like, I LOVE striped shirts!! And Chris for sure looks cute in them!! But a real adolescent kid is not dedicated to a single style for that many years!!! And, like, where are the graphic tees???
Sorry, this devolved into talking about costume choices, which, obviously, I have similar issues with. 😬😅
But, anyway, of all the bland homes in the show, I think Bedford St. might be the worst. It's just so...white? idk. It does not compel me!
