Buckeye Life: Not what you think
I identify as a Buckeye. I’m a senior at The Ohio State University and am a senior majoring in psychology. Ever since I joined the university, no, ever since I was accepted I considered myself a true Buckeye. I’d be attending the school of my dreams with so much opportunity and talent I could hardly believe it. It was tough to get in, even applying with a 3.6 GPA and a 28 ACT led to myself getting wait-listed and then an acceptance letter in the next stage. Of course I knew I was accepted before I received any mail; I couldn’t wait the recommended time they told me to but checked and saw my application status was set to complete.
The first year was difficult but honestly all of my time at Ohio State has been incredible. I treasure it completely even though there were definitely bad times. I’ll remember all of my friends and the craziness well. But I’m also going to never forget the hours I spent worried about even passing my freshman year chemistry class or stressing about an upcoming exam or homework assignment. Or the hours spent deciphering what I’m supposed to be doing for my online homework in Statistics (2nd level Psych, crazy teacher.)
I guess what I’m trying to say is: I’m sick and tired of people who are not Ohio State students judging Ohio State students like they fully understand us. They see pictures of the parties and think that all Ohio State students do is party. They hear a media report on the “Riots” that accompanied the winning of the 2015 College Football Championship game after they beat Oregon. That media report is just one side of the story. There’s another explanation. Those students partying it up on the weekend? Probably doing so because the rigor of the classes at Ohio State exhausted them and they need to recharge. The “Riots”? It was harmless except for a few idiots who tore down a practice goalpost. Dangerous? Maybe a bit, but the police definitely overreacted. Thousands of students singing Carmen Ohio on the Oval and then going to their favorite places on campus to gather was definitely not dangerous.
Yet if I defend Ohio State students people just choose not to believe it. It’s crazy to think that unless everything is really cut and dry they just choose to not believe Ohio State students could actually be intellectuals. Mainly because of Ohio State’s party school and best football school reputations (both of which are of course well-deserved). In my opinion this identity is tied into a stereotype, but it’s funny because of the dichotomous meanings that people can get from that stereotype. Those who are students hear of a Buckeye and know they worked hard but those who have only seen pictures from the media see a bunch of party-hard every day of the week individuals.
I wouldn’t trade the identity of being a Buckeye for the world. I just wish I could get everyone to see the true identity of Buckeyes. We work hard and play hard. There’s no simpler way to say it. - Tyler Whitlock, Blog Post 3
