So what I'm thinking happened was -

- Writers originally pitch Eddie and Lucy

- Lucy's actress cannot commit to the show due to prior commitments

- They replace Lucy with Tommy

- Actress who plays Natalia was unavailable to return to the show

- Actress who plays Marisol WAS available to return to the show

- Writers replace Eddie with Buck

The endgame is and will be Buddie. However, what I think happened is that the timelines were swapped, so Buck is the first of the two to come into their sexuality, and Eddie will follow.

And when 9-1-1 airs on NBC next year I have an idea for their next crossover episode...
