Being a telepath indeed aids in Emma not being easily spooked or startled. It’s hard to surprise someone who can hear your thoughts. Especially since most people forget they think loudly the more nervous they get. But things happen. She may not pay much mind to the thoughts and things slip through.
As far as losing focus goes, Emma has learned over the years how to maintain it, she has to like most telepaths to block out the noise, or it becomes overwhelming, but certain things can make her lose focus. During times of great stress its harder for her but she manages.
