Budding Prospects (1984) by T.C. Boyle
In this novel Boyle describes the life of three young men trying to become rich by growing marijuana in the north of California. Very optimistic at first they soon have to fight against natures adversities, isolation and conflicts among themselves. Furthermore problems with the local police and some neighbours occur. Not to be forgotten, that the customer seems to be insincere with his farmers.
As you see there are a lot of things discussed in this novel. But, even though Boyle wrote some beautiful passages in this book, it did not catch me the way I expected it would. At a certain point all new problems just seem unnecessary and without any chance of improving the story. To me it seemed like an endless series of problems that is (and this is something sad) absurd all that much. Yet Boyle is unable to create something deeper with this novel. As this sounds really negative I want to make clear, that this novel is quite funny at times. It is just not what I expected from my first Boyle novel.
