Love In Colour intrigued me from the moment I heard about it. I always mean to read more short stories (and I certainly have enough on my shelves), but the idea of the author Bolu Babalola re-imagining ancient stories from around the world really appealed to me. With a focus on the folktales from West Africa, Greek myths and ancient tales from the Middle East are also re-written in a modern, very accessible and enjoyable way. I particularly appreciated the way in which Babalola has empowered the female leads in her stories and given them a loud and incredibly inspiring voice. The lovely Kelly from @smeets_x and I chose to enjoy Love In Colour as our first buddy read and by reading two stories a day and discussing them, I got so much more than I ever could have anticipated from this collection. As with all short story anthologies, it is natural to prefer some stories over others but I was amazed to discover that I enjoyed every single one. If you’ve known me for any length of time you’d realise that I’m not a big fan of romance, in fact sometimes I go out of my way to avoid it 😂 but with Love In Colour, the author does something magical in ensuring the romance section of each tale is believable and never exaggerated or sickly sweet. Yes, sometimes it may be slightly predictable but there were other moments that I was not expecting at all and I love when an author surprises or shocks me. The tales in Love In Colour are inclusive, powerful, occasionally dark and representative for female-female relationships. I finished every story feeling myself empowered and determined to succeed in my life and I can’t wait to see what Bolu Babalola writes next.
