Work is a religion, leaving early is heresy.
This used to be the mindset of all top managers which started by silicon valley executives.
Studies now show that not only is working long hours counterproductive, it also affects your personal life and sense of belonging.
Not only is working long hours unnecessary, it’s stupid. Working more doesn’t mean you care more or get more done. It just means you spend more time at work.
Workaholics wind up creating more problems than they solve. First off, working like that just isn’t sustainable over time. When the burnout crash comes–and it will–it’ll hit much harder.
Workaholics miss the point, too. They try to fix problems by throwing more hours at them. They try to make up for intellectual laziness with brute force. This results in bad solutions.
In other words, you may be able to use overtime to catch up on lost work, or to make a final push towards the end of the project, but push too much and you’re better off having just stuck to a 40 hour a week schedule.
There has to be a balance in our lives. time for work, family, friends and for ourselves. spending too much time at work disrupts the balance and affects our health and relationships.
Top managers usually have more flexibility attending their kids activities, taking long lunches, more vacations, spending time in the office just playing a game. They might spend more hours at the office but their work hours are less.
