so apparently there was this period in greek helmet design in like 550-500BC or so where dudes were just tipping them up and wearing them on the backs of their heads like Cool Dude Bicyclists and as a result the eyeholes began to matter less and less and eventually became entirely vestigial. this coincided with the Age of Prongs and i guess those were intended to anchor horsehair crests or whatever but fuckin lol
