YMCA stands for the Young Men's Christian Association. It began in London in 1844 and assisted young men with a place to eat and sleep while they came into the urban areas to assist with railroad and buidling development.The first YMCA in the states was created in Washington DC. The YMCA of Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun was organized in 1892, to provide a variety of educational and recreational programs for the purpose of improving the spiritual, mental, social and physical condition of young men. The mission of the current YMCA is to provide our communities resources for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. They offer a varieity of youth programs, fitness activies and living resources. http://www.valleyymca.org

Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ The First Security Building is often noted as the most architecturally interesting building.This building was constructed in 1928 with a Renaissance Revival design. the founder of Valley National Bank, built a penthouse on top of the buidling in 1958. It has a grassy backyard with a white gazebo. ASU's Phoenix Urban Research lab is located on the 8th floor of the building. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Phoenix Historic Property Register.
