Shortly after 1300hrs today, Pump 312 was responded to assist Pump 387 and HAZMAT Tanker 387 with a working fire in a commercial building in the CBD of Mudgee. A fast, offensive fire attack by on scene crews brought the fire under control and prevented fire extension in to the second floor of the building. Crews remained on scene until just after 1800hrs, ventilating and making the area safe for incoming fire investigators so they can determine the cause of the fire. At 2213hrs last night, Pump 312 Gulgong along with local NSW Rural Fire Service crews were responded to a building fire just outside of Gulgong. Upon commencing a rapid, offensive fire attack on the structure, BA crews from 312 noticed that water was reacting unexpectedly with something inside of the structure, which pointed towards a potential HAZMAT risk. The owner of the premises had also indicated that there were a number of chemicals located inside of the structure. The crew at 312 immediately established exclusion zones and called for the assistance of Pump 387 and HAZMAT Tanker 387. Upon extinguishing the fire, crews were able to locate an amount of pesticide inside of an adjoining building that had been partially impacted by the fire. Due to a rapid initial attack by the first arriving crews, both from Fire & Rescue NSW and our local Rural Fire Service volunteers, extensive damage to this adjoining building and its contents was avoided, and the spread of the fire was considerably minimised. Crews recovered the pesticide in to a HAZMAT recovery bin and, upon extinguishing any smouldering hotspots, returned to service at around 0330hrs this morning.
