At 2035hrs yesterday evening, Pump 312 Gulgong was responded to a house fire with persons reported. Callers to 000 (Triple Zero) had indicated that people may be inside the house. Crews expedited to the location of the incident and were confronted with a house, fully engulfed by flames; a likely unsurvivable event for anyone. Joint efforts by Fire & Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service brought the fire under control some hours later. All of the occupants of the house, thankfully, were away at the time that the fire had occurred. A sad event for any family, but possessions can always be replaced, while lives cannot. A huge relief to everyone on the fireground when we discovered that everyone was safe and well. Our well wishes are with all of them, and the many other families who fall victim to house fires, all around the state, and indeed the world, each and every day. The other night we posted a shot to do with the new Fire & Rescue NSW Incident Management System, which is based on an adapted model of the Blue Card system currently used by fire departments right across the USA. The entire Blue Card system is based a textbook written by Chief Alan Brunacini of the Phoenix Fire Department, titled "Fire Command", and it sets a whole new standard for how incident controllers and firefighters interact in order to better manage incidents. This is a picture of crews from yesterday's fire making up their gear in preparation to head home. Traditionally, you only called for assistance if you really needed it. Under the new system, firefighters "order big and order early", meaning that you're better to order in resources as quickly as possible, so as to reduce the spread of the fire and decrease workload for on scene firefighters. Yesterday's fire is a great example of how well this system works. The first fire attack team that made entry to the building had an ample supply of backup BA (Breathing Apparatus) teams to relieve them when they came out. Not only does it mean increased safety for firefighters, it also increases their confidence in the systems that we place around managing the jobs that they're working in. Shortly after 1300hrs today, Pump 312 was responded to assist Pump 387 and HAZMAT Tanker 387 with a working fire in a commercial building in the CBD of Mudgee. A fast, offensive fire attack by on scene crews brought the fire under control and prevented fire extension in to the second floor of the building. Crews remained on scene until just after 1800hrs, ventilating and making the area safe for incoming fire investigators so they can determine the cause of the fire. Just before 3pm this afternoon, Pump 312 Gulgong was responded to assist the NSW Rural Fire Service with a large spill of hydraulic oil on the Castlereagh Highway which spanned for almost two kilometres.
