Ten years ago, today, I stood with these prophetic colleagues at The White House, joined by dozens of other faith leaders, calling for an end to Gun Violence in our country. It was one month after #Newtown. Hundreds of school shootings later, hundreds of thousands of lives torn later, one armed assault on the US Capitol later, three synagogue gun attacks later, we are not resigned to things as they are. This is Amir Ohana, Israel's new Speaker of the Knesset. He is the Knesset’s first openly gay person to hold the role. I'm sure I disagree with some of his political commitments. But he is a symbol of what is real in Israel. The vote to confirm his role as Speaker was 63-5, with all coalition lawmakers voting in favor except for United Torah Judaism MK Yaakov Tesler. Yes, two ministers of Knesset seemed to protest Speaker Ohana's inaugural speech. But let's make sure to focus on this fact: he vote to confirm his role as Speaker was 63-5. We've got work ahead to continue tending to the heart of our homeland. I'm ready to do it. I hope you are too. This is a Shehechiyanu moment. Ten Years After Ghana © Rabbi Menachem Creditor with immeasurable gratitude to American Jewish World Service - AJWS for opening my eyes Ten years ago my soul was torn apart and I was redefined by exposure to the world as it is. I stood among redeemed slaves in Ghana, and saw how little I knew, confronted with my own limits and with the sudden, blinding knowledge of my own power and responsibility. I pledged, right then and there, to hear and see and feel with my one raw heart as much as I possibly could, so that I might act rightly in the world and have no reason for shame nor reproach at the end of my days. Today I affirm that commitment and cry freely with the recognition that, despite my best efforts, it will never be enough. Our task is to serve and to lift this broken world of ours one inch closer to heaven, for our children's sakes, and for theirs as well. Six years ago today, 49 people were killed in a shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. We will not stop fighting to end the domestic terrorism that is American Gun Violence. It is structural, it takes many forms, but the common thread is clear: the blood of 40,000+ victims hasn't mattered enough to motivate elected leaders to unshackle themselves from the NRA.
