WHAT IS A BUILT IN FLASH?
A built in flash is the pop up flash installed in most DSLR cameras. It is useful for taking pictures indoors, and also acts as a fill-in when taking photos outside because it softens shadows around the eyes and below the chin. It can create perfectly exposed images too.
However, it can create a red eye in portrait images. This is caused when the flash’s “flash tube” is too close to the camera lens and when the subject’s eye looks directly into the camera lens, it casts back as red. The closeness between the flash tube and the lens results in a narrow angle of reflection, which means that the flash light enters the pupil, bouncing off the retina and back into the lens. The red eye produced is created because of the reflection of the colour of the blood vessels.
The red eye possibility increases in low light environments because the pupil is wide open as it is dark.
When using the built in flash, you are working with two different light sources; the ambient lighting and the flash.
