A Joyful Seoul: A Walk In A Time Capsule, Part 03

Our long walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace to Bukchon Hanok Village proper was like in search of a promised land. We were like the Israelites out of Egypt but on a street level. We don’t have a Moses to follow, just a colorful tri-fold map. We don’t even have manna from heaven but good conversations to keep us with.

En route to Bukchon Hanok Village, I witnessed how discipline and organized Koreans are. No obstructions along the pathway or sidewalks as we walked on by, like vendors or as such. Vehicles are properly parked in their designated parking slots and no parallel parking on narrow streets. On a designer’s point of view, there’s no visual clutter. I haven’t smell any foul odor nor air pollutants. And if there are, it was the smell of kimchi and aroma of Korean dishes being cooked in the kitchen restaurants.

The atmosphere was a chill in Bukchon Hanok Village, though it was mid-day when we were touring the area. Our walk was aurally refreshing. The noises I’ve heard were the giggles and throbbing footsteps of excitement by other few tourists, for which I can’t blame them, 'cause I giggled too in the inside upon seeing rows of preserved heritage houses in pristine condition right before my eyes.

It was such a sheer pleasure walking and marveling the heritage houses of Bukchon Hanok Village — as if I were inside a museum and the heritage houses are like paintings hanging on a long horizontal wall. Aside from the repetitive tile design patterns, the big wooden doors which strike me most. Aged gracefully by time, I can tell it has a deep history etched on the surfaces worth telling about the houses and its former residents.  

And if I’ll walk through again the streets of Bukchon Hanok Village, Angelina or Waltz for Debby by Earl Klugh, would be my ideal accompaniment piece.
