Helping out at Helens House of Hope. A dog rescue and re-homing sanctuary in north-western Bulgaria, near the town of Vratsa. The photo is of Bowie, one of the dogs that came to the shelter while I was there and that I got to name. My first association when I saw her eyes was David Bowie. One day we heard terrible screaming from the village. It turned out that a man sadly had died from electricity while doing renovation at home. A few days later someone told Helen that villagers blamed the dog for what had happened because it howls and wants to kill it. Poisoning dogs has occurred there before and some children wanted to save the dog and brought it to Helen's House of Hope. Bowie was, unlike most other dogs, in fairly good shape and is very freedom loving. She has tried to escape several time already. It's very sad that she has to be locked inside because of village superstition and I really hope that someone would like to adopt Bowie soon. Helping out at Helens House of Hope. A dog rescue and re-homing sanctuary in north-western Bulgaria, near the town of Vratsa. The dog sanctuary was started by and is basically run by one women from UK - Helen James. She moved to one of the poorest regions in the European Union about two years ago and is now responsible for about 70 dogs! And a retired police horse named Democratzia! Helen’s House of Hope also works with the community to help local people improve living standards for their own dogs. A group of volunteers – all of them local school children – take the dogs out for daily walks and learn about the proper treatment and care of the animals in return.
