andrew needs to play a cowboy or a bull rider (even a farmer) bc it would be so HOT
I. HAJIME
FULL-TIME HANDYMAN. PART-TIME BULLRIDER. A RATTLECREEK TREASURE.
i. HOW DID WE MEET?
I was elbow-deep in toilet water and losing the will to live.
Swear to God, I’d watched three YouTube videos, read the instruction manual twice, and still couldn’t figure out why the damn thing kept leaking like it had beef with me personally. The floor was soaked. My shirt was wetter than sin. And the wrench I was using? Slipped and clocked me square in the shin.
So yeah—I cussed. Loud. In public. Right in the middle of Rattle Creek Hardware, standing in the plumbing aisle like the ghost of bad decisions. I was halfway into a sentence that involved the words “whoever invented toilets should be publicly flogged” when I heard him behind me:
“You need help or just here to traumatize the staff?”
I turned around fast—ready to throw hands, honestly—and there he was.
Iwaizumi Hajime. Tan, broad, and built like the kind of man who knows things. Toolbelt slung low on his hips. A little sweat on his collar. A look in his eyes like he already knew I was about three seconds away from crying into a PVC pipe.
I blinked.
He blinked.
“I don’t need help,” I said, real fast. “I need vengeance. You understand?”
He snorted. Actually snorted. Then stepped closer and plucked the gasket out of my hand like I was holding it wrong.
“This ain’t even the right size.”
Ten minutes later, he’d talked me through what I needed. Twenty minutes later, he offered to swing by Pumpkin’s Place after his shift to help install it. Claimed it was “on the house” since he didn’t want the whole bar smelling like swamp water.
Been fixing things (and making me flustered) ever since.
ii. WHAT IS OUR RELATIONSHIP DYNAMIC?
It’s a push and pull—mostly me pushin’, him pullin’ me right back in line.
I like to talk big, sass him up just to see that muscle in his jaw twitch. But Hajime? He’s the kind of man who can shut me down with a single word. Doesn’t even raise his voice—just says my name all slow and low, like a warning. Like a promise. And suddenly I’m swallowing whatever I was about to say, heart kickin’ in my chest like I just got caught stealin’.
He’s strict. Stern. Says what he means and means what he says.
And yet…
Sometimes, when I’m feelin’ brave, I’ll reach for his hand or brush up against his shoulder and catch the way his ears go red. Just for a second. He’ll look away, clear his throat, tell me to quit it—but his hand won’t move.
He makes me want to be good. Makes me want to listen. And it ain’t because I’m scared of him—it’s ‘cause I trust him. I know he’ll take care of me. That when everything’s falling apart, I can lean on him, no questions asked.
I give him hell. But he gives me peace.
