The Importance of Bundling Up

We all know that warm clothes are important during winter months. They keep us warm, comfortable and ensure our safety. In fact, a good coat, gloves and a hat are the most essential articles of winter clothing!

Sickness is often prevented – as is frostbite – when you take precautionary measures to keep your body warm with good base layers. Zipping the heat in insulates your trunk and stabilizes your core temperature so your body can work smarter – not harder.

Not only do gloves provide protection from the bitter temps, they can also provide grip, allowing better function of cold hands and fingers. Old and young fingers alike require extra protection from the cold because skin is generally thinner on the hands of the very young and elderly.

No matter your age, staying safe in the winter is a must in Iowa. Whether you’re in the snow for work or a good old-fashioned snowball fight, there’s no reason not to take a couple extra minutes to bundle up. It will keep you warm – and well!

I am not ready for winter. Already, there is a chill in the air, stealing across my skin and leaving goosebumps in its wake. I bundle up before the coming storm.

On the other hand, I can now fall asleep in any warm building! Just curl up in my coat and scarf and let the warmth soak into my bones and melt them into somnolent puddles.

I can tell natives from transplants because the natives say “snowpocalpyse” or “snowmageddon” if there’s more than powered sugar on the ground or the snow lasts more than 24 hours.  

Seattleites are generally snow wusses, and even though it was 25F and felt like 17F, neither I (East-Coast-raised) nor my counselor (mid-West-raised) cancelled my Monday morning appointment because to both of us, you just bundled up a bit more and dealt with it.

In that photo, I am wearing 9" boxer briefs, knee socks, polypropylene long underwear, smart wool long-sleeve undershirt, smart wool ankle socks, fleece leggings, waffle knit long-sleeve shirt, fleece sweatshirt, surplus police boots with ice/snow cleats, thrifted scarf that is reversible wool and velvet, ankle-length wool coat ($8 thrift!), fleece hat with built-in balaclava, knit gloves, and fleece gloves.  It was like one more layer of clothing than a really cold October fire circle with a less-beautiful-and-more-functional hat.

It was almost as deserted as when I masked up and went walking during the wildfire smoke in August.  Either scenario, liminal as shit and I’m completely equipped and ready to deal.
