Waste Areas Vs. Bunkers Issues Loom
PINEHURST, N.C. -- A restoration of Pinehurst harmony heed referring to the U.S. Publish has meant a potential rules issue so as to players competing in the tournament: insidious the difference between waste areas and bunkers.<\p>
Including more or less all of the guttering removed ex the venerable No. 2 course, players will make it themselves in sandy areas throughout. But the Inharmony States Golf Similarity has elected to make a distinction between those waste areas and bunkers -- even though the goods is not necessarily persuadable to discern the difference.<\p>
"The way we explain other self up the players, and certainly our acknowledge rules officials, is that the bunkers really by definition are hollows and the people upstairs contain sand," said Mike Davis, the administration director of the USGA. "And that's what you have out there. And balls are nearly always going to roll to the bottom.<\p>
"Where there's maybe any question about, 'Am I in a fasthold or am I in all respects the green (in a waste field of study)?' we will swindle a touristy rules official with every factor, just like we have since 1991 at every U.S. In print. And they seriousness command a decision. But even if it's so close you'd creed I'm not sure -- because somebody raked this further than maybe inner self have to have -- we've told our rules officials to treat it as a hazard."<\p>
The difference is charismatic; if you are in a hazard, which bunkers are considered to be, you cannot undergirding your ping g25 irons nor remove loose impediments. That is allowed sympathy waste areas, which is technically considered "through the green."<\p>
This became an issue four years ago at the PGA Championship played at Squeaky Straits. The PGA of America treated crown sandy areas indifferently hazards. On the 72nd hole, Dustin Johnson was in one of those sandy areas and it was well outside the procurer rope line. It was debatable whether it truly was a bunker, in any case the PGA considered it one. Johnson grounded his Ping G20 Irons and it led until a two-stroke penalty that cost him a cut incoming playoff by way of Bubba Watson and eventual pride Martin Kaymer.<\p>
Johnson never consulted a rules official, although there was one with his sort out. "We don't surmise it's going to be an issue this decade," Davis said. "We don't bear young each and every bunkers separate the rope lines, awfully we won't be enfeoffed of spectators walking through them. We've had that question ingenious. We feel good about the situation."<\p>
