I've seen this meme around and I'm joining it with the Catalan versions of Lent food.
According to the Catholic tradition, the 40 days of Lent are a time of penitence and abstinence. Believers are supposed to fast by not eating meat nor luxury food.
Every country has its own recipes to eat during Lent, based on vegetables and fish. Though it's not common to follow the religious restrictions nowadays, people still like to eat these recipes on this time of the year. Because they may be simple and made with ingredients that aren't fancy, but they're still delicious!
In Catalan culture, for Lent it's typical to eat cod fish and, most importantly, lent fritters! 😋
Lent fritters (in Catalan, bunyols de Quaresma) are a fried dough fritter with sugar. They are absolutely delicious! Sometimes they can also be filled with custard cream.
The photos in the meme are: cod fritters (savoury), chickpeas with spinach and pine nuts, cod with samfaina (a Catalan sauce similar to ratatouille), and Lent fritters.
