Un été brûlant. À travers les murs de son appartement, AMEN DUNES entend chaque jour la même musique. Trois titres inconnus de musique éthiopienne qui s'échappent de la pièce voisine. Quasi hanté par ces notes, il décide de les apprendre une par une et d'en faire un disque, "Ethio covers". Un 45 tours où il reprend à sa manière ces trois merveilles africaines. Comme une dépendance que l'on aimerait transmettre à chaque personne que l'on rencontre, ce disque ne m'a quasiment pas quitté depuis sa sortie en 2012. La nostalgie étire peu à peu la peau des ténèbres, l'écho de sa voix s'écrase contre des vagues de guitare. Chaque os, chaque neurone entre en transe. Derrière ce pseudonyme un peu étrange se cache en réalité Damon MacMahon. En 2006, fatigué du microcosme new-yorkais, il fuit la grande ville pour s'installer dans une cabane au nord l'état de New York. De cet enfermement et de cette solitude en ressort un premier album magnifique, "Dia", qui sortira en 2009 sur le label Locust Music. Il s'expatrie ensuite quelques années en Chine où il enregistre ce coup-ci "Murder Dull Mind", un disque plus dépouillé, frôlant parfois le silence. Depuis son retour à New York, Damon a enregistré "Through Donkey Jaw", un album toujours aussi inspiré et qui l'impose comme l'un des grands noms trop méconnus de ce qu'on pourrait appeler la "weirdo-psyché-folk". Et encore, c'est si réducteur. C'est pour diverses raisons que nous lui avons demandé de nous préparer une mixtape spéciale musique africaine. La plupart des morceaux qu'il a choisi proviennent de cassettes sans titre, d'où le manque d'information. Dommage mais cela ne vous empêchera pas, tout comme nous, de l'écouter en boucle.

Troubled by the compositions of Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music and Scott Walker, this young, classically trained pianist from Lexington, Kentucky evokes the moments that bring us together - the ones we'd like to make last forever. Knees bump up against nostalgia, the frequencies of the saxophone resonate all the way to the bone. Five ballads, oscillating between home-made pop and careful songwriting, shine bright to the sound of that very particular crooning voice. Our memories have disappeared behind the mirage. Because we've got everything left to live. Soundless, but not without music. Not without this music. The album artwork is by artist and musician Robert Beatty (Hair Police, Three Legged Race...). He has also worked with bands such as Peaking Lights, Real Estate, and Wire magazine. This record is being released in collaboration with the new label Bureaubureau. The CD version is available through the American label Hop Hop.

Idiot Glee - Pinkwood

If this track from the new Idiot Glee EP were to be represented in pictorial form – by a cartoonist, say – it would probably be drawn as a luxurious, caramel filled chocolate bar with stick arms and legs, playing a bass guitar, possibly with a pair of funky sunglasses on. Kentuckian James Friley clearly loves Roxy Music; his Life Without Jazz EP, out February 26 via Atelier Ciseaux/BureauBureau, is his first new material since 2011’s Paddywhack.
