These lettuce-wrapped burgers with caramelized onions are a delicious and low-carb alternative to traditional buns. The sweetness of caramelized onions complements the savory burger patty perfectly.
Ingredients: 1 lb ground beef. Salt and pepper to taste. 1 large onion, thinly sliced. 2 tablespoons olive oil. 4 large lettuce leaves such as iceberg or butterhead. 4 slices of cheese optional. 4 tomato slices. 4 pickle slices. Ketchup and mustard for serving.
Instructions: Put olive oil in a pan and heat it over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring every now and then, for about 20 to 25 minutes, until the onions turn caramelized. When the onions start to turn brown, make burger patties out of the ground beef that has been divided into 4 equal parts. Add as much salt and pepper as you like to the burger patties. Warm up a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. For medium-rare, grill the patties for three to four minutes on each side. You can cook them longer if you want to. When the burgers are almost done, put a slice of cheese on top of each one and cover them to melt. Put a big lettuce leaf on a plate to start putting it together. Sandwich patty on top of the lettuce leaf. Put onions that have been caramelized on top of the patty. On top of the onions, put a tomato slice and a pickle slice. Place the lettuce leaf around the burger and cheese. Tack it down with toothpicks if you need to. Put mustard and ketchup on the side. Have fun with your burgers wrapped in lettuce!
